Barry, I knew somewhere I'd read stuff around metal shaping, so I checked in the archive it was in the SA Hotrod magazine Spring 2009.

Have you guys set up a website since then ?

No website yet
I try to contribute to SAHR regularly (as regularly as it comes out     )
Other than that I do try to get the message out that this kind of thing can be (and is being) done right here in SA by doing the occasional show, talks at car clubs, my formal courses as well as informal "open house" events.

I do have to say their is a little bit of niggle that comes from the frustration due to about 95% of telephone responses to ads going like this:
"Wow, I am so glad I found you. Please tell me more about these courses you do"
"Sure, the courses are designed to give a grounding in sheetmetal shaping. The idea is to teach you all the basic processes. We cover the theory, and you actually make a panel yourself. Everything is done with handtools so you can go away and immediately start practicing without needing any expensive equipment"
"Awesome - you know I've ALWAYS wanted to learn this. How long is the course and what is the cost?"
"3 days. As far as possible we will structure the dates to suit attendees needs. Even over weekends. Cost is R4500-00 which includes all your notes, materials used and daily refreshments"
"This is so fantastic. I'm DEFINATELY coming. Where are you based"
"We're on a little wine farm just outside Stellenbosch"
"Oh no, that's too far. Can't you be closer to me?"...................

OK go figure, mini rant over  - anyway, for anyone that seriously "Always wanted to learn this" Travelling to Stellenbosch and paying in rands is a LOT cheaper than travelling to the States or the UK (and paying in rands!!!)

I'd like to do your course Barry, but you are too far away from me

Hope to see you there in the Volksrod! ;)

Cool pictures Barry, but why no pictures of the T-shirts you talk about. Not all of us can afford on of those metal master pieces but surely funds will be available for a nice T-shirt!

Thanks Neresh! It really isn't difficult, but it is something that you only get good at by practicing.

As for the shirts, I will happily post them to you (IIRC postage is about R50 with Speed Services) Let me know your size and I'll send you bank details.

Interesting day yesterday -
Up at 3 to get things ready for the trip & on the road after a few delays.
Outside Laingsburg the Volksrodster started spewing oil (second motor this week doing the same thing!)
Checked it out & decided to leave it there & push on with the incomplete Dodge rod on the trailer. Tow vehicle started developing some electrical issues and later started overheating. After being on the road for 13 hours (and managed to get just past 3 Sisters) we decided to head home. Got back in at 12:30 last night!

Anyway John & Graeme will still be at the show (minus one roadster body) & they'll have my T-shirts there (please buy some to help me buy a new cylinder head & rewire my bakkie ;D ;D)

Barry
