Ranger SS

Post by deltaforce » Mon 02 May 2016, 20:26

Hi guys, does anyone have any details regarding the Ranger SS gearbox. Was it a close ratio, were there any special features, was 4th gear 1:1 etc. I am busy building a 1900 Manta S for historic racing and I know that the original Manta gearbox had pretty wide ratios. The car came with a Ranger SS 'box so I m trying to find out if it is indeed worth using.

Owned a 74 Ranger SS, last one sold in Meyerton. Had valve bounce @ 5500 RPM! Rear diff 4.5. Had long range between gears! Tourque curve was flat @ 2250RPM. Have a copy of the owners manual, will look it up!

Sorry no data on the gearbox in the owners manual
Autobook:
Number of forward speeds - Four
Synchromesh - All forward speeds
Gearbox ratio:
Top = 1:1
Third = 1.37:1
Second = 2.16:1
First = 3.43:1
Reverse = 3.32:1

Please share some pictures of your Manta and/or you building process.

My Manta has the original Trimatic Getrag box.
I have the two workshop manuals at home which should have all the data on the ratio. only have this data where i am sitting right now

I think that's the information that the OP will need to confirm that it is definitely NOT a close ratio box.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. OK so that definitely rules out the SS gearbox, will probably go the BMW route now which will also have the advantage of being 5 speed.

Are you sticking with the 1.9L CIH engine or going to a XE or Ecotec engine?

Here's a link to a nice tuning guide, might be of interest...

What diff ratio will you be running in the car, if you want to use the BM box?
