Upcoming Kalahari Desert SpeedWeek

Post by speedweek_pete » Wed 08 Aug 2012, 18:29

Hi All

I am one of the organisers of the Kalahari Desert SpeedWeek from 22 to 30 Sep 2012. Not sure if any of you have heard/read about it but its in the tradition of the annual Bonneville speed week held in Utah, except its local in the Northern Cape. I dont want to hijack threads, but if you want more info, here is our site : http://www.speedweeksa.com.

We would really like to see more muscle cars attending (japs and germans are taking over :( ). If have any questions or comments just reply to me here. I will be happy to assist.

Hi, thanks for joining the forum to allow us to ask questions here, firstly and maybe an odd question, what sort of ablutions will be set up, why.. is my wife is a true petrol head but still a girl and one of her first questions was ''what sort of showers do they have'' 8O secondly were do I find a copy of the scrutineers checklist and thirdly is a tire question, is it better to run narrower tires and will we be limited for safety reasons to only run up to our tire manufacturers speed rating ?
Hot rodders recycle, where's those prius' going when the greenies have a new fad.

Well your question is not odd at all. We know the ladies must be well catered for or we will be banned from attending :D. The container ablutions being built are very well designed, and I am sure the ladies will be most confortable. There will be one for ladies and one for gents. I have attached the spec sheet to impress the Missus. We are also installing 2 x 40 000 L water tanks and and a 16km water pipeline, so there will be hot and cold water, as well as a water purifier plant.

If you purchase breakfast and dinner, here is what you can expect:
A Kalahari Buffet Breakfast with a selection of the following:
  • Cereals
    Freshly Sliced Fruit
    Eggs of the Day
    Corn Fritters
    Hashbrowns
    Fried Mushrooms
    Tomato Au Gratin
    Pork Sausage
    Mutton Sausage
    Boerewors
    Bacon
    Pork Rashers
    Selection of Breads/Muffins/Crepes
Tea, Coffee and Fresh Fruit Juice
And for a nice hearty buffet dinner, we will be serving up a selection of the following:
  • Roast Leg of Lamb
    Traditional Chicken Pie
    Ovenbaked Roast Vegetables
Pumpkinfritters served with a Caramel Sauce
Green Beans, Bacon & Cherry Tomatoes
    Baked Potatoes
    Savoury Rice
    Brown Onion Gravy
    Mint Sauce
    Mixed Salads
    Sherry Truffle
There will also be Vodacom 3G coverage and even BBM will work. No confirmation from MTN just yet and CellC is not on the cards, sorry.

Scrutineers Checklist
The checklist is almost ready for publishing, so expect it shortly.

Tyres
This is a sticky one at this stage. The last thing we want you to do is get a Darwin Award. So think carefully before exceeding your tyre's capability. You will be required to sign a comprehensive indemnity prior to running as well. If you wish to exceed your tyre's capability then you do so at your own risk, but know that it may very well be your last run ever. Is it really worth it? But to start with, you will not be able to exceed the rating anyway and here is why:

Clay running is uncharted territory, so everybody attending Kalahari Desert SpeedWeek for the first time will be considered rookies. So you have to level up your club licence to protect you from killing yourself. Everybody will start at level 1. The Licensing Officer/Track Mentor will be watching how you handle yourself and the vehicle during the run. After a safe run within your restrictions, you can go convince him to sign a level up. Then you can go faster. Exceed any of the licence restrictions and your stay is over. No warnings and no exceptions. We are dishing out free runs to assist drivers to achieve level ups.

Level 1 : 2km track @ max speed of 200km/h.

Level 2 : 2km track @ 250km/h max.

Level 3 : 2km track @ 300km/h max

Level 4 : 5km track @ any speed -> Go For Records

We are also considering color coding caps as bragging rights. Level 4 may be a Green Cap, so you can clearly see who earned their level ups 8). They may also become next year's mentors.
