Re: 454 - Built for Torque, do's and dont's

Well there is one thing I will say , big block power and torque is addictive , last BB I had was a monster 454 in an El Camino - high 12 sec drags on stock tyres and a total blast to drive on the street - 100-0 in 30 secs (100% tread to canvas) The roar and rumble of a BB is also just so much better...

Re: 454 - Built for Torque, do's and dont's

Ive had a lot of 454's in different vehicles , they come in various flavours and power levels from a flo 185 hp to 500+. For your application , you want to build a torque monster , so go for around 9/9.5:1 CR , oval port iron heads , a mild cam that goes max to 5500rpm (owner always wants more cam/c...

Re: Which distributor?

Buy a dizzy with adjustable vac advance (niot that vital) but more importantly one that comes with different weights , springs and adjustable stops for the mechanical advance so you can precisely set the advance curve.
You get what you pay for..so go quality like MSD

Re: sticky rings

You really need a ring job , but you can try and additive like seafoam or just try some ATF squirted into the cylinder and left overnight or for a few days , turn the motor over a few times after by disconnecting the coil lead and bumping it via the starter. In all probability anything you pour into...

Re: Chev 4.1 250 L6

Be VERY careful of skimming the head for an increased CR.. a few things to consider are that you might have pinging problems and the car will be a lot less tolerant of lower octane fuels , you might have to retard timing which negates any gains and you will have to get a more aggressive cam for the ...

Re: Chev 4.1 250 L6

If you want to make more power , you need to do a few things , raise Compression ratio , a cam and flowed/worked heads/valves - but all this will really do is make power at higher rpm and can decrease torque at low RPM- considering its never gonna see WOT and is a cruiser - my advise - dont bother Y...

Re: Headers/extractors/branches???

It's just a lot easier to work in mild steel than stainless - mild steel + ceramic coated will also last and look good , the stainless (and chromed) often gets a blueish sheen after some heat cycles. also never heard of or seen a cracked stainless system...

Re: Chev 4.1 250 L6

Blue smoke on start up is an indication that oil is seeping in thru the valve guides , could be worn guides or seals.
Check the cam and lifters for damage and worn lobes as well.

Re: Diff ratio changes

You would do a lot better going for a 4l60e / 4L65e or even a 4l80e (if you putting out a lot of HP) and one of these locally produced Transmission controllers
