Ford Fairmont GT 1970 - Great restoration project

Post by david gimpel » Tue 18 Jan 2011, 16:38

Hi,

After owning my 1970 Ford Fairmont GT (XW shape) for 20 years I am now looking for a new home for it.

It was working perfectly till I rolled it (after a blowout on a dirt road in the Karoo). Roof’s a bit dented in, but sides not too bad. A great restoration job for someone. (especially if you can find a 6cyl Fairmont body for cheap, and chop ‘n change body parts).

It had a comprehensive service and tune-up prior to fateful trip (at Mechanicar, Cape Town)

351 Cleveland engine. AT. The only non-genuine parts in the car are the Powerflow pipes I put on recently.

ID plates intact.

Car is in Cape Town.

Asking price: R55 000

Sorry, here is a pic pre-accident.

Will swing by the car later today or tomorrow to take post-accident pics.

BTW - had chassis checked out and all is fine.

  Am so sad to read this, saw this car oustide a bicyle shop in the CBD last year and wow just wow had to be the nicest XW GT I have ever seen.

Virtually everything was orginal, real time warp car.

Thanks ZA Perana,

Was gutted when it happened, still am.

But luckily my two toddler kids and wife got out without a scratch. With all the modern safety devices they put into cars these days, there's still no substitute for a solidly-built car.

Hurts me to have to sell after being together for 20 years.

PS if anyone is interested in restoring this car, I have the number of a guy who has a 6cyl Fairmont with a body in decent nick - going for R15k.

Is a sale a must do because I am sure over time you could build it up again, Burt on the forum does great work on these cars, perhaps something to consider as I think the sentiment attached to owning something for so long.

Glad everyone got out without injury, thats the most important thing.
