Ford 2.3 litre Pinto Engine

Post by henryk » Sat 19 Jun 2010, 10:50

Hi Guys

Most of you will know this engine.

Came out in an early 80's Mustang. (I think)

It was a 4 cylinder 2.3 Turbo.

Most of the engines were replaced with V6 or V8 engines during the years.

I'm looking for a basic engine, sub assembly & Cylinder head. Don't need turbo or any intake & exhaust manifolds.

Required for a normally aspirated project build.

Kind Regards

Henry

2.3 Lima engine is the right name.
We have a lot of them in Argentina. Our Taunus and Sierras were powered with them in 2.0/2.3 (Taunus) and 2.3 (Sierra).
Our Sierra used too the German 1.6 Pinto...

Our Ford Rangers also used that same motor along with the American Ford Fairmont/Mercury Zephyr and platform mates.

Quite correct gentlemen, it was called the Lima on your side of the world.

But I'm looking for a head and sub assembly is South Africa.

As it is a pre 77 engine it is allowed to be used in Classic Racing in South Africa , hence the reason for looking for one.

Would someone like Rassie not have one of these engines lying in a dark corner?

Thanks Rassie

But 2 litre engines we have plenty of.

Maximum we've been able to stretch a 2 litre is just about 2.3 litre by boring & stroking.

But if we can start off with a 2.3 and fit a 2.5 Ranger crank and apply the other boring and stroking tricks we can get it to 2.7 or more. In the USA they "stretch" these engines to 2.85 litre or even a full 3 litres, but that's using a special SVO block.

Hi John

The little blue car's Pinto is at 2.3 already.

But the "to be built" 2.8 is for our own car, mine and Craig's.

It's 80% built and what works on ours will be passed onto the blue one.

But as we're not such good drivers (rusty) we need the bhp to make up on the straight bits what we lose on the corners !

Our engine rules read " any engine block from the same manufacturer with the same no of cylinders provided it was available pre 1977"

So the 2.3 Pinto (Lima) would be 100% legal for this application.

Well done on the A2 replica. Best in the world I say.

Must talk about our Portuguese friend.
