Classic open day at Killarney
Re: Classic open day at Killarney
Welcome back Gunter.
How was the land of Oz? Buy any Australian V8 Supercars?
Correct the Noble belongs to Hannes Swanepoel. Kosie loves it. Says the things got no traction control, no ESP or any other drivers aids, so you can really drive it.
Sundays Classic Car thing could have been better advertised. I asked the Classic Chairman why there was no mention of it in eiter the Argus, Burger or even Tyger Burger. Seems no one thought to tell them.
Lack of true classics on the circuit, well I understand why.
This was an open day where anyone could take to the circuit. Problem is you have no idea of the abilities or capabilities of the other drivers or their cars. I would never take a valued classic onto the circuit under these circumstances.
One example was the 5.8 litre Chev Rekord thingie from Wellington. Complete with Auto box, towbar, 4 x 4 stance and little brakes. Guy was hitting the brakes at the contol tower to stop for turn 1 !. Nothing against the chap as he paid his money and had his fun, but I would not feel safe with that thing around.
With regard to the R40 enty fee. Well I.m a member and paid my R40 without complaint. The purpose of the day was to raise funds for the Classic Car section of the W P M C. This money gets invested back into Classic racing via subsidy of enty fees etc, ultimately resulting in better racing for all concerned. And despite the track not being oversubscribed with cars , the nett taking after all expences was almost 40% up on last year.

Correct Gunter, it was silver.
Re: Classic open day at Killarney
I don't have a problem with having to pay for a fund raiser. This wasn't directly classic car show per say, but a nice get together for the occasion.
Having said that however, it would have been good to see more road going classics out there. Those who wanted to bring their modern day road cars out were welcome. I feel that if oldies like Koos Swanepoel and Peter Gough were there it goes to show that they weren't peturbed about having to pay to go in and to drive their cars. Gough was driving his AMG Merc around. It was a day where guys could also sell bits and pieces too. I picked up a seat and steering wheel for my Datsun which hopefully will be ready for July.
The atmosphere was laid back with okes like Louis and the boys braaiing out in the pits. This is what it's all about and that is commoraderie, mixing with and meeting people. Sure it could have been advertised better, but for us who were there, we all could get food and drink and have a natter.
There were a fair number of cars out on the track but no fireworks. It wasn't a day for racing. For any clubs that complained about the costs, I suggest that they take a long look at what they would do for fundraising within their circles.
Remember the track yesterday was being used. There were marshalls, beakdown vehicles and medical personel on hand and these have all got to be paid for. If you are organising things like this, nothing comes for free.

didn't even know about it...
to give you guys an idea:
when we host a 2-day downhill skateboarding competition,
it costs us close to R15 000!!!
that is for medics, marshalls, haybales, shuttles, permits, etc.
and then we don't pay for the road usage!
on average for smaller races we enter about 40 riders.
entrance fee is about R250 for first category and R100 for second.
so for R350 you can practice and race for 2 days!
if all goes well you can do about 6-10 runs for practices.
if all goes really well you can make it to the finals. (works on knock-out system, top 2 of 4 riders advance to next round)
so in short, to pay R40 to drive your old car in a "controlled" environment...bargain!

Not Quite, Wally. The enterance to the track was R40 per person and if you wanted to go around the track with your car, it was another R160 per car for the day. If you wanted to go with a driver as a passenger, it was R50 per ride. That's the way I understood it.
Re: Classic open day at Killarney
doh! my bad... at least our races are free for spectators!
but it is still expensive hosting events. point i wanted to make was that if it cost about R15k to host a simple downhill event, what must the costs be for an event like that...

I posted my thoughts twice and lost the posting twice. So now I am a bit pissed off and am going to sulk for a while
Re: Classic open day at Killarney
I agree 100%. With this thing imagine all the members paying for their own fund raising event? How pathetic would that be?
If you go off the the Maynardville Community Chest thing, you have to pay to get in and still pay more to eat, drink and play the tombola! The public need a wake-up call if they think they going to get a fund raising day for free
This was a nice day, but could have been better. Well done to Chris and the boys! Look forward to next year.
How's your dad?

Some pictures of the day....
Re: Classic open day at Killarney
Not about the money gents. It’s the principle of the matter I pay my due’s to the last washer in classics. But it has reached that point where I have taken note of how this scene operates.
I stand by my point they should think about paying us to present what costs us time, patience and hard earned cash to show.
Maybe things will change sometime right now this whole classic scene is a business scam under the pretences of nostalgia. Not everyone but overwhelmingly so.
