Mazda RX3: Colin Burford/Giv Giovannoni 1972 Sprinbox series

Post by zahistorics » Sun 02 Nov 2008, 20:43

Hi all,
Jannie van Aswegen has bought the Colin Burford and Giv Giovannoni Mazda RX3 that raced in the 1972 Springbok series. It is in a bit of a state, but will be restored. We are looking for pictures, and post Sprinbok series history on this car:

Can anyone help please?

John,
My late dad-in-law loved his Mazda RX2 and photography. The are some 8mm cini footage of production car races that were taken at Klerksdorp? around that time. They are somewhere in a box!

Gordini,
You are right! My dad-in-law worked at Stillfontein! That is why I put a questionmark behind Klerksdorp!

The best racing in Klerksdorp was on the Kafferskraal road behind the Klerksdorp dam. Illegal racing with about 200 non racing spectators in cars attending, and the "launch" of the Canam was here. The first appearance, although unofficial. My Dad was a car maniac and took me with. The beat, the appearance and the aggresiveness of the car was unbelievable

Hi John

Give us some background about this car. I think the Japs bought it out, but what happened after it raced here? Where has it been all this time? Is it complete?

Two Mazdas were brought out for the Springbok Series in 1972, both being S102's. The number one car was driven by their drivers, Yoshimi Katayama and Toshinori Takechi, numberede 19 and the number two car was for Colin Burford and Giv Giovannoni, numbered 20. If I remember correctly the Burford car was the only S102 that raced in the LM 3 hour, the other one having gone back to Japan.
