Just checked on the results of the 1972 series. Seems like both Mazdas raced in the full series but only one set of Jap drivers raced in CT. The other car for this race was driven by Burford and Giv.

In all other races, Giv, Burford, Clapham and Nieman were used and normally Giv was on his own.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the pics so far. The car we are interested in is the Burford/Giv/Nols car. That is the one with moulded in light color arches. Katayama/Takechi has black bolt on flares.

I am not sure of the cars history. I'll try to get Jannie to post some here.

I have only seen the car once at Jannie's. The is partially disassembled and a bit rusty, but restorable.

Two Mazdas raced at LM:

Question: Is the yellow car the Katayama/Takechi car?

The yellow one would be the Katayama car as the author writes that these were the two factory entered rotaries.

He could have the names mixed or possibly they did swop around for that race. Seems like that car did not finnish the other finnished in 8th. Hence possibility of one of the Japs jumping into the other car if the one was beginning to fail if that be the case.

Says the top two pics are of the cars parked outside the Cardoso Hotel. He lived in the houses by the hotel you can see to the one side of the one pic.

Thanks for translating Lino.

If they were both factory cars then the yellow one is the Katayama car. See the bolt on flares.

If the results I have are correct, then no 16 was the Giovannoni car and no 17 the Burford and Clapham car.

In Hi-Fi's pix, the car no 19 is driven by Katayama/Toshinori and is Yellow/Black and is no 16 for LM

Car no 20 is the White/Red car that is no 17 for LM

Agree with KR's analysis.

Now what we need please is pictures of the Burford/Nols/Giv car (SA car) in the other 3 hr races so we can get the livery right. Colour would be even better! Thanks.

I think the pictures that were posted is all you gonna get. The attraction for those cars wasn't as great as the M10's because you didn't have people like Van Rooyen and Gough driving them.

If anyone has new pictures please post them. I would also like to see.

I'm hoping someone has pictures of the cars in frame where they were not the main attraction - like the shots of it being passed by the Gunston Chevrons.

Also any history on both cars, especiall the Japanese car.

John I am interested in the history of these cars.

My understanding was that the drivers returned at various stages during the series but the technicians remained with the cars to the end. I always thought they returned to Japan with the cars. If not, who bought them and why did we never see them again after the 1972 Springbok (or is it Protea) series. What value would the cars have by being kept and not raced. Did the Japs maybe donate the cars? Someone must have the story
