Henry, do you know what happened to the rest of the car? Do you know the guy who owned the property where the body was dumped? What has happened since you found out about the body, in other words, do you know where it is today, or did it wind up at Chicks Scrap Metal?

This seems such a pity. That car was well sorted out from what I remember. How can it just be chucked out? Isn't this rather typical of what has been going on in this country? It would be great if cars like that could be sold and restored. With that car being the only one of its kind racing in the country, it makes it very unique and an important part of motor racing history, very similar to the Briggs Anglia saga.

Sorry

I have no idea why the car was there, what happened to it or where it is now.

Must say it must be 10 to 15 years ago that I saw it in Paarden Eiland.

One guy who might know is Willa Swart who currently runs Hydrenco.

The company is no operating from the Stikland Triangle area.

Willa is seriously involved in Karting with his son Wiaan.

Will ask Willa when I see him at karting again if he remembers anything about that 164 Volvo.

Why would anyone chop up a F5000 car and use it as a donor for other projects like converting to a sports car. How many LDS's ended up like that?

Remember a car really only becomes a "classic" when old farts like us sit a reminice about the good ol' days. Then we attach some importance to the car.

At the time it is simply a racer and at the end of its life it becomes a burdon, occupying space. Now you get rid of it because some guy can use the parts and thats it.

If Gough's Escort can fall into that category, then some unremarkable Volvo 164 who many here could not identify the driver of, most certainly will also.

One day you may get tired of your Anglia, it costs you money and time. The guy who you sell it to has no real attachment to it, and it costs him money and time too. And his wife moans about it taking up space. So, parts bin, here we come, or worse, scrapyard here we come.

Sad but true.

All said and done, it's a pity that there hasn't been a bit more foresight. But I guess if it is because finances come into play, this sort of thing can happen. It would be great to see the more modern Volvo as a historic car on the track as well as the B18.

Sorry, no news on the 164.

I'm surprised that no one else saw the car in Paarden Eiland.

I saw it there a couple of times over a period of a few years. It still had the flared wheelarches but narrow steel rims.

Will make a call to Piet Geldenhuys (Railways) and ask if he remembers the car.

It would be interesting to find out how the car got to be there and what happened to it. It would be nice if someone could come up with a good picture if it too.

I have a nice picture of a Volvo 144 taken in one of the 3 hour races at Killarney.

Its not the Droomers car and I,m 99% sure it was driven by the same Tvl duo of Els and Kruger.

I actually suspect that this is the same car later converted to 164 spec with new frontend sheetmetal and a 6 cylinder engine. But this is my own thoughts and I have no proof.

Pity I'm to stupid to post the 144 picture on here.

Got many racing pictures I'd like to share with you but I'm handicapped when it comes to computers and their workings.

Bumped into Piet (Railways) Geldenhuys on Saturday.

Asked him whether he remembered the Volvo 164 racinf shell at Hydrenco.

Not only does he remember it but says there was a sponsor sticker on the car reading "Moyes Crane Hire" or something to that effect.

Piet said he was interrested in buying the car with assistance from Andre Brink, but after having a close look at the car decided it was too much work.

Apparently the car had no engine and had been left standing outside in the yard.

It was badly neglected and the workers had started using it as a "lunch room"

Piet confirms it was definately the Els/Kruger car but has no idea where it finally came to rest.
