Harry van der Spuy RIP

Post by zahistorics » Wed 29 May 2013, 21:57

I am sad to say I got this news in my inbox today:

Good Day Sir,

My name is Johan van der Spuy. I have noted that, over the years, there have been a few threads on this forum where people, including yourself, have mentioned - and obviously known, or known of, Harry van der Spuy.

I regret to inform you the Harry died in his sleep this past weekend. He was 76 yrs old and his health had been poor these last few years.

I am unsure of the forum do's and dont's so I have not posted this on the forum myself. I merely joined the forum to send this message to you.

Please would you inform the members of your forum as you see fit, of this sad event.

Thanking you , sincerely
Johan van der Spuy. (nephew)

I have replied and welcomed Johan here and asked to to post if he so wishes.

My memories of the man:

Always turned up with a clean and very well prepared car
Always wore an immaculate white overall
Which made a smart combo

On Alan Ford Stadium's tiny one third mile oval he was like an angry wasp in a bottle, buzzing round and round. almost always on the throttle in one long drift all the way around the track. Frightening on slicks on tarmac. Later they tore up the tar and we got to see races on dirt and later cinders. Even more sideways action.

The fact that he seemed to always finish first or second, seldom any further down was testament to his abilty to drive that big powerful Hilborn injected Chevy engined sprint car very effectively. Highlight of Saturday nights when I was at school.

Thanks for the memories.
