Hi

Regarding the Hennie Mostert Gordini.

What a famous road racer.

I remember it well.

French blue with while stripes in the sides and "Team Renault" stickers on the rear fenders.

In the early 70s Hennie and his mates Pierre and Rocco Joubert in Alconis used to terrorise the locals at the old Worcester stock car track. The track was a dirt triangle (before the modern ovals) and these Renaults used to come visiting on a Saturday afternoon in the Boland sun,
beat everyone in the very popular spectator race and disappear over the mountain back to Paarl.

Another guy who used to join in the fun was Louis de Jager with a R8 Alconi. He was a young auto electrical appy in those days. Today he's retired and races his replica Lola T210 at Killarney.

But those early 70s were fantactic years. Fairmont GTs
Capri V6s and Peranas, Cortina GTs, Anglia with 1600GT Crossflows ,1300-GT Eccorts and then the quick Renaults and Fiats which all seemed to hail from Paarl.
And compared to today those cars were so simple to modify and maintain.
Escort's Forever !

Regarding the question of where some of the old "saloon" racer have gone. I always wondered what happened to the Zodiac that Trevor Blokdyk used to race. It was not very reliable but quite quick. Any have any ideads on this.

I believe that the Basil Van Rooyen Mustang is the one owned and raced by Derrick van Blerk at Killarney. He recently put it into a tree during practice and the car is in his garage severely damaged. However what happened to the Meissner prepared Koos Swanepoel Mustang that behaved like a dog against van Rooyen?

What about the Bob Kelsey Zodiac? Where did Bob Olthoff's Fairlane 500 end up? and Gough and Swanepoel's Argus series Capri Perana's? And Swanepoel's Cortina Perana?

Someone must know and I'd love to hear more

Well at the risk of causing an argument I am 99.9% sure that the van Blerk Mustang is not that raced by Basil as the one he raced was a notch back not a fast back.

I have a few pictures of that Zondiac, very much moddled on the one race by Basil van Rooyen, both seemed to be very quick cars.

As for Peter Gough's and the Swanepoel Capris, I beleive both were in fact returned to road trim, even though Koos damaged his car severly in an accident in 1971, there was another car that I might just know the whereabouts of....

The Meissner Mustang I beleive was returned to Ford in PE and what happened to it from there remain a mystery.

I like you find the though of these cars just sitting around fascinating, I firmly beleive that many of these cars are still around but to me finding one would be a rare experience, not matter how insiginficant the car is, the fact is the the car has history, it was part of what I call the golden era of motorsport but perhaps for me its a bit differant in the sense I wasnt around back then(am only 23) so I am even more curious to see what I can only look at in the yellowing pages of old CAR magazines...

The sad thing about that Mustang that pranged this time last year is the real thing. the one that we see in Jo'burg is a replica and a good one at that which Basil Van Rooyen had a drive in. We are a bit mixed up here, we seem to do things back to front just for the sake of it. Plus as far as I remember the crashed Mustang was the Championship winning car in 1966.

The Bob Olthoff Failrane 500 last I saw damaged bonnet was hanging up at Fat Arnie's pub just outside Kyalami. There was a whole lot of memorabilia there. Incidently the one evening we were there with Bob, Koos and others Bob pointed out his Fairlanes bonnet, his helmets and the famous big poster of Z181 at Kyalami which he donated to the pub.

If I remember Koos mentioning that his Capri Perana went back onto the road after he took over the ex-Olthoff Gunston car A2 Perana. The Cortina which was also the ex-Olthoff car then went to robbie Smith, then to somebody else I think and is or was abandoned somewhere in Jo'burg just the shell.

You are correct about van Blerk racing the fastback Mustang. However he bought this from a guy from the UK after the Piper series in 2007 after he had totalled his notchback Mustang (van Rooyen's I believe) at Killarney. I initially was lead to understand that his Mustang was the Swanepoel car as there was some debate about this in the pits, but it now appears it is ex van Rooyen.

Jacques, that Mustang was the early type which is the one that was pranged. But it was already heavily changed out of era last I saw the car before it was pranged. The one he is racing now is a fastback.

This was last the last race of the season here. This is the new car Van Blerk is racing now.

This is correct. In fact he peddles this car in the Fine Car races which seems a bit unfair. The pranged Mustang was virtually a Wesbank spec car with a Nascar engine - totally out of spec for classic racing.

I am now very convinced that the car wasnt BVR's car and I can talk to the person that did all the suspension work for van Blerk, he might know.

But in all honesty it would be hard to prove the car wasnt raced by BVR, as one Mustang looks just like another....

If I remember the totalled van Blerk car may previously have been owned by John Amm. But was that BvR's car??

What I cannot understand is how can there be such confusion regarding such famous cars ? Now with this electronic medium of commu8nication they can scrap these committee's they have which don't seem to know themselves what's gong on.

The information is all here on this side of the fence and some of the legends that are still with us on the "other side of the fence".

There is no such thing as "don't know". It is we either the real thing or it is not. There is such a thing as money that seems to be re-writing history. It's scary because you can't even say anything without being scared off with a troop of lawyers.

Personally I think the time now is right that the whole classic car race scene crashes with a hard thump and they start again from scratch. If they closed down Killarney tommorow it would'nt bother me the other circuits too. There is a lack of respect for the legends of the past by the manner in which all this complicated nonsense has creeped into historics.
