Thanks to Dattiman for E mailing the pic to me.

Brought back memories seeing the 44 of Deon de Waal.

And his sponsor Ten Up Tyres.

No idea who no 9 is, but would take a guess and say Dup du Plessis.

Many names mentioned here that bring back fond memories of my 'gravel' days. No the No. 9 was car is my late cousin 'Charles (Charley) Waring.

Sadly I don't recall all those drivers and their cars myself in that picture. If I do recall correctly, did Ray Butters not also do commentary at Goodwood. Someone was nicknamed 'Ray Mutters' co's he always muttered at times and you could not always hear clearly. Legendary Jack Holloway was as loud and clear as a modern day F1 and always had a joke or chirp. Also at some stage Jack was driving both the V8 'stockie' and the 2.5 Firenza (both Goodwood Body & Spray) so he had less time to do commantary. Anyone remember more??

Anyone remember Rufus Papenfus commentating? He was a bit of a character. Butters did do some as well I think.

Sure. Rufus was a bit of a character. I think a few 'milos' where usually taken before and during the racing and Rufus would sometimes let slip with a few choice words in his vocabulary. I think he was eventually banned from commentating at Goodwood.

My later memories of the late Charlie Waring was that neat looking Alfa GTV stockie he had anyone remember that ? He was in V8 sprint cars before that was'nt he ?

If memory serves did he not lose his life on a bike, a Goldwing I think he had ?

Jack Holloway was lekker onbeskof but there was a sidekick besides Ray Butters that passed on was'nt there ? I must say although I used to cringe when seeing some of the cars that were stripped and welded with pipes and things quick-quick then eventually scrapped, those were good night's at Goodwood. My uncle's house was in Thornton just across the road which you could hear the cars so clear especially the V8 sprint cars. In fact a wide radius from the stadium it was a well heard sound through the years.

Speak of the Jack Holloway Firenza, that was my car. I came out the Army and wanted a Can Am but had no idea what a 302 was or 350. I knew a 308 as we used to go to school in a neighbours 308 E; Camino backie so I figuered it must be a similar engine to the V8 Firenza. I paid 150 ZAR for that car will post a pic when I find it, Their had been an underbonnet fire so the car was parked. I gave the motor away to a friend with a CJ2 Willis Jeep. Then I started looking for a 308 motor and that is when I bumped into my friend with a Can Am.

This pal with a Can Am gave me a hiding down Voortrekker Road on my GS750 Suzuki from a 60km/h rolling start. I was unaware of a Muncie's 100km/h in 1st gear. He then said I must come atround the next day abnd I can drive his car.

We became friends then he did me a favour and I gave him the coupe minus most the fittings as he wanted to make a dragster out of it. He then did some deal with Oom Jack that had a car sales place. At that stage Oom Jack had a Vauxhall Viva stockie A100 which always used to park in the infield between races. He scrapped that Viva and then apeared with my Firenza also same number. Francois Holloway his son then took over the car and raced with much success until they smashed into the car and scrapped it. He Francois then transfered the mechanicals into a 323 rwd Mazda which he then won a championship with if I remember correctly. I remember one night I took my Firenza GT's fanbelt off for Francois for his last race which he won and that belt snapped too.

Fond memories, sadly Francois passed away recently at a young age.

100% Lino, Charlie was a master in a Sprint car.....raced neck to neck when sprint cars were at there best with Kotie Malan,Deon de Waal,Ettienne Kitching and Robert Schepel.

Yes, Francois passed away just before his 50th birthday.... i really miss him he was a great guy and when we both raced Super modifieds at the Killarney oval 1999/2000 i always tried to pit as close as possible to him - he was amazing at making even the most tense pre race butterflies go away with his constant humour!
