Hi John.

Phew, many many cars carried the Gunston colours.

Very 1st saloon was the Bobby Olthoff Cortina Perana Mk2 Onyx Production car.

2nd Saloon was Z181

From memory the 1st single seater in Gunston colours was the Repco BrabhamBT ?? of John Love. Love's team mate at the time was Sam Tingle who could have been the owner/driver of the LDS mentioned by you earlier.

During the 70's , especially for the Springbok series, cars would come in from abroad, were painted in Gunston colours for the series only, and presumably the cars were then reprayed when they returned to Europe.

Fondly remembered cars were the Chevron B19/21's and the Paul Hawkins ex Can Am Ferrari Spider.

To this day I own a Scalextric Lola T70 that I painted in Gunston Colours in 1970 !

Keep up the good work.

Henry,

All of you facts are correct. After the Gough Capri pics, does your sister not have any more hidden photographic gems like that?

John,
It is a pity that Joe Putter (Wynns MD) passed away in April 2005. He was a highly clued oke, had a memory like a steel trap and of course was the Gunston Team Racing Manager. That's why a large percentage of the drivers ended up working as Wynns agents. It may be worth getting hold of his son, young Joe, who is the current main ou at Wynns in Joburg.

Knowing Joe snr., I would imagine he would have kept records, files, whatever and they may have survived. I'll give young Joe a ring on Monday morning and make a few enquiries. You never know.
Cheers,
Doug

As an aside its amazing how much sponsorship there was in motorsport in those days when compared to today.
Alfa GTV 3.0
Ford Capri Perana V8
Chevy Lumina Supercharged

Wait not for tomorrow to do what can be done today, live each day for one knows not what the next day may hold.

Thanks Doug. It would be great if you can put us in touch.

Joe Putter is also the reason that A2 came oh so very close to running with Wynns sponsorhip in 1972... but that's another story.

I am back on this after a long gap.

So far have found 36 cars that raced under Gunston colours!

F1: Brabham BT20, Brabham BT24, Brabham BT26, Brabham BT33, LDS 10, Lotus 49, 2x Lotus 72, March 701, Surtees TS9

Saloons: Cortina Perana, 3 x Capri Peranas, 2x BMW 535, BMW 745

Sports: BMW M1, Chevron B16 spyder, Chevron B19, 2x Chevron B21, Checron B26, Ferrari Can Am Spyder, Lola T70, Lola T212, Porsche 917, Porsche 956

I am very thin on detail on the Formula Atlantic era. I know of 3 x Chevron B25s, March 77B, March 79B, March 832, March 842, Ralt.

Any others anyone?

Morning John,
Did you finally get hold of young Joe? We seemed to have a plethora of missed PM's, emails etc..

If not, email me once more. I wouldn't like to make his details public.

Cheers, Doug

In 1983 a Team Gunston BMW 535i was raced by a driver with the surname Els.

See a pic here http://www.motoprint.co.za/index.php?ma ... s_id=29290

Waht was Mr Els's first name? Any other info on him?
