That's a wicked wing - Not too big.

How effective would that wing be, if I may ask.

The drags need a lot of down-force on the tail-end, hey.

Nice, but as the economy is at the moment, my car trailer will have to do :(

At the top speeds I go I think the car doesn't really need one, as the car is as aerodynamic as a brick, but a race car must have a wing.

To keep the hood closed, we fitted Dusz clips.

Image

We made these aluminium pedestals for the Dusz clips to close. We fitted 8 clips.

Image

Replaced the distributor cap and the sparkplug wires with MSD 8.5's, and spaced the cords out neatly.

We chose to use the Powerglide 2 speed transmission for the car. The main reason is cost, ease of building and maintaining, and the fact that approx 75% of bracket racers use them.

We used this book by Carl Munroe extensivly for the build. We almost used all the modifications he suggested in the book. Will just show some of the things we did to the box.

Image

We used the OEM PG 1.76 planetary set. Would have liked to go to straight cut gears, but the OEM sun gear, ring gear and planetary assembly is plenty strong enough for our needs.

Image

We overhauled the Carrier with TSR overhaul kit, that includes Pins, Needles, Thrust Washers.
Really an exercise of patience fitting 180 needle bearings.

Image

PG Pro Tree Transbrake Kit This kit contains all the parts required to convert an OEM valve body core into a Pro tree transbrake. Some machining is required. Includes 2 wire solenoid. The shift pattern remains forward PRN21.

Image

PG Pro/Full Tree Spool Valve Replacement reverse spool valve. CNC machined steel valve. This valve is the main component to make the transbrake work.

Image

Some of the other parts we changed is a new TCI steel input shaft, extra clutches and a heavy duty band. We used the Australian powerglide that was used in 308 cars, as they had the bolt-on bell housing, that will fit straight to our JW bellhousing. Really saved a lot of time and machining effort using this case, but as you will see later, this case has got one major flaw. Used the OEM pump.

Image

Really compact and light transmission, one of the reasons they are so popular.

Image

Fitted to car. We used a TCI 3500rpm stall 10 inch "street fighter" torque convertor. Also see the deep cast aluminium transmission pan. The transbrake solenoid is fitted to the back.

The rear disks and brakes are from Mercedes. We skimmed the disks and enlarged the center hole to fit the side shafts.

Image

Made these brackets to fit calliper to diff.

Image

Welded all the brackets etc and then for paint. We have a welding jig to narrow 9" diffs and prevents warping during welding.

Image

Assemble third member to diff

Image

Fitting the diff and measuring the propshaft for manufacture.

Image

Installed the back brake pipes etc. We used these hangers to replicate the shock length.

This is such a Pro job !

Simon, what would the shortening of a 9 incher cost about ? How does one measure your vehicle for shortening ?

Thanks for this thread !!

Thank you.

The size of the tyre you want to use is the first step. The limiting factor is your wheel well size, interference from the chassis beams and/or suspension on one side and your body work on the other side. You would probably need to fit mini tubs or full tubs to make narrowing a diff worth it.

This a link to Strange Engineering order form that show the dimensions you need to look at.
