Racing Sports Cars
Re: Racing Sports Cars
I've pulled this thread up from the dead.
Im trying to identify the origins of the car below.
I'm told the car pictured came from Durban, with a Ford Kent engine and a VW Beetle gearbox before these were replaced (in Port Elizabeth) with a BDA and a Hewland. The yellow paint was also appplied in PE. This car has been owned for years by a Port Elizabeth resident, although the body was replaced some time ago with a Tiga body.
The body looks to be almost exactly the same as that fitted to the Ecosse mark 2 (red car pictured below) except for the slight angle to the top of the side pod and the shape of the wheelarch behind the front wheel. The "strake" along the side of the rear body is very distinctive and not a detail I have seen on any other car (Lola, Chevron, March?) of the period.
I understand from the information in this thread that Jack Holme built 4 cars, all of which are apparently accounted for. Could this be another car from the same area (built by someone else?) that used the same body?
The "period" photos are from a later time than that in which the car would have been built originally.
Cheers
Fred

Re: Racing Sports Cars
Jack built 4 Ecosse cars:
1. Lotus FJ (18?) based. Written off in LM. Remains rebuilt as a Lotus FJ
2. Red car in your picture. Now owned by Ritchie Jute, as far as I know
3. Blue car. LDS based. Receently restored in Cape Town, owned by Steve Hamble
4. Light Yellow car. Built as a road car. Scratch built chassis. Lola T212 body mould with closed top. Kombi gearbox. Originally powered by Coventry Climax 1.5 F1 engine, later replaced by a Ford (Kent?) engine. On Jack's death it was inherited by his grandson in Australia.
This does not look like Ecosse 4. From where, where are these photos?
PS - how's the Lola build going.

Re: Racing Sports Cars
Hi ZA
Thanks for the response.
The pictures of the yellow/black car are from Aldo Scribante in Port Elizabeth years ago, and I have seen the car in that form with my own eyes. I am intrigued as it seems this car does have the same body as Ecosse 2, hence my post.
As for my project, I am now almost finished with the body moulds. Thanks for the interest.
Cheers

Re: Racing Sports Cars
Fred,
Although it a bit like Ecosse 2, there are many detail differences. Notably front wheel arch shape, and air intakes on top.
I would guess that with those looks the body dates from mid to late 1970s - abot 10 years after Ecosse 2.

Re: Racing Sports Cars
I agree about the the front wheel arch/side sill detail but can't get over that the side strakes on the rear body, the shape of the extreme front of the nose, and the 3 holes in the front of the nose do suggest that the bodies are at least derived from the same source. Maybe this car had a body made from the moulds used for the Ecosse 2? Or the other way around?
The pictures were probably taken in the 70"s but the car existed before that

Re: Racing Sports Cars
I must put some more detail of my project up, but all I have to show further at the moment is the almost complete body moulds.

Re: Racing Sports Cars
The Ecosse's are documented and known so I don't believe this is one of them. The car has a bit of a Lola T212 look about it and certainly is very neat.
Locost build replica 7 kits and I wonder if this is not something built by them.
