Hi guys

Would you please recommend a reliable shop to have an engine/bottom-end/reciprocating assembly balanced, in the Western Cape?

It's not for a race car, would just like it to run a little better.

Has anyone attempted to do this yourself?

Only guy I can recommend is Flip Smith of Kuilsrivier. He does it in a workshop at home and does good work. I will have to scratch for his number.

Dave Ingle (DICE) is also good, if a bit expensive and I don't know if he is still active.

If you want to do a simpler balance (not including a dynamic balance of the crank with pulleys and flywheel/flexplate) then you can for sure do it yourself. Now that you can buy a cheap digital scale at Clicks for a couple hundred, it is within reach. Pistons straight forward, weigh them, take the heaviest and start lightening till it weighs the same as the lightest. Do this by drilling or grinding around the gudgeon pin boss area underneath/inside.

Rods the same principle, but you also need to do an end to end balance. Remove material from those square blocks on top and underneath.

Factory balance is to within about 10grams, some go to 5grams. Usually performance balancers aim for 1gram, but I doubt you'll ever know the difference between a 10gram and 1gram balance.
