1974 Ford Cortina GT

Post by 20vee » Thu 10 Dec 2009, 10:49

Hi Guys/Dolls,

Does anyone have any info on these cars?

I have been searching for a original Cortina XLE and stumbled upon this that I am buying.

Il take pics and post up when I pick her up.

Any info/specs will help as I have never heard off or seen a 74 Cortina GT before.

Body shape similar to the XLE with double round headlights, front seats that form into a headrest, cubby that slants away strangely and broad stripe down the side. Personally i am of the opinion that this car was quicker than the XLEs.
Be interesting to hear from some okes who really know Cortinas.

By the way, where you from, I've seen a couple of XLEs for sale in Cape Town in the last couple of months.

Well the GT has the 1600 Kent motor so it definately wasnt as quick as the Big Six, having said that though the Kent takes well to modifications. Mk3 GT's are indeed very rare, I have only ever seen one.

I had a '74 Cortina 3000 GT which i bought in 1979 and i had it for a couple of years. It was definitally faster than the XLE Cortina. Handling was a bit rough though. A set of 205/13's did not do the job. A fun car to drive and is as scarce as hen's teeth nowadays.
Wish i can find one today....

it never came with a 1600kent (imo) it was one of 2 engines, either the old V4 or the pinto OHC ,
and i am pretty sure it was the Pinto ( and this from a chevy man!)

Sorry, dont know what I was thinking
It came as a 2000Gt with OHC motor and a 3000gt. Some had the Big Six badge on the rear. They had twin round headlights.3000gt was replaced by the XLE in 74.

Hi Guys,

Im afraid the Cortina MK3 GT in South Africa came with a 2.5 V6 motor,
Yes there were four cyl variants but they were not GT's

Cheers.
