V8 Grenada , Perana - Pre Purchase help

Post by Shaughn » Thu 22 Dec 2016, 08:20

Hi there

Need some advice and help as I am looking to purchase a Grenada I found.
Original vIN is BG1190

He is looking for around 50k also comes with 4 extra doors with glass and a spare Bonnet etc

It is a rebuild so it's has I am sure lost the Original aspect of its value.

Engine is solid clean no leaks and fires up first time.

Will need interior work and respray .

You didn’t post the Perana tag.

I can’t be certain, as I don’t have the decode info for Granada’s, but I’ll hamper an educated guess at decoding the data plate you posted:

E = Source ~ Ford of Germany
X = Assembly ~ Neave plant (Port Elizabeth)

GF = Granada 4 door sedan
S = Year of Assembly ~ 1976
G = Month of Assembly ~ April
36213 = Serial Number
217121 = Sido number
Blank = Position for the engine code is blank, perhaps indicating it could be a Perana?
N = Floor shift 4 speed Manual
C = Diff ratio code (don’t have that info, and this is usually a numeric code, kinda strange)

Trim codes
P = Parchment Vinyl Roof
0 = Monotone
G = Tan interior

A = Metallic paint
0 = Monotone
5 = Burnt Gold (perhaps “Fern”, if it used an older Ford coding convention)

Not sure if this will align with what is there, there seems to be some Ghia trim pieces, wood door trim and dash, earlier Consul grille, the interior might be recovered, the patterns seem off, not sure if you can see any evidence of a vinyl roof…

From the data tag, I think it should look more like this car:

Yea they going to clean the tags off as they sprayed over them, it is a rebuild and it has never been on the road . Always been paid and licensed etc will post a better pic if I get it.

What do you estimate this to be worth , is it worth 50k and to fix and finish off ?

What is the engine number? Back of the block behind inlet manifold just above the bell housing. You can see it looking straight down form the top.

That depends entirely on you, what you want from the car, would you restore it or not, etc, etc.
From what you have posted, there is still very little to suggest this is a genuine Perana, and not re-bodied, or having just a BG engine.
If it can be proven, it'll be good, if it turns out to be a factory manual car.

Guideline on price, a link to another Grenada Perana, this car has been for sale for quite some time, so you'll have to make your calculations...

.

I think it's a bit far gone to be financially worthwhile restoring to original.
Just want to make sure I don't over pay as it no longer has "restore" value .

As I understand it's no longer the original engine in the car, it is Ford V8 though.

It is a 4 speed manual transmission. Apparently bought from dealers and then went in to be customized and has never been on the road, just in a garage

I must add license etc and paperwork has been paid every year and is up to date but it needs to put through COR and on the road for the first time. Stall has factory pink slip that shows it never went on the road or COR from purchase dates.
A bizarre situation to be honest and hence me checking here as it sounded weird.

If I had R100 for every time I have been told the bold part I would be incredibly wealthy. I call the seller out on that one to be honest, there has only been ONE occasion when I found this to be true and it was a Firenza driven on trade plates for 30+ years.

The car itself seems to be fairly decent based on the pictures, find out what diff it has because the standard 3 litre diff wont work well, the final drive ratio will be too short.

Ask the seller if it has a toploader gearbox.
Alfa GTV 3.0
Ford Capri Perana V8
Chevy Lumina Supercharged

Wait not for tomorrow to do what can be done today, live each day for one knows not what the next day may hold.
