Newbie! Advice needed please!

Post by nixon » Tue 13 Feb 2018, 10:47

Hi all! I'm new to the forum and need some advice please - I'm based in Cape Town and looking to get a 1980 Mitsubishi Colt Galant!

I'm a little concerned about spare parts though - their availability, cost, etc. I'm not aiming to mod anything or do anything fancy, just keep it running and look after it. Are spares relatively easy to come by? Are they expensive? What should I look out for or check before I buy the car? Any recommended mechanics/garages in the Cape?

Any advice or direction would be super appreciated, as I'm super-keen on the car, but also working in a limited budget. Thanks and looking forward to hearing anything back!

Welcome Nixon

The Galant was an excellent car, but with a very limited production run.
Drive train is fairly bulletproof, but you'll have to cultivate a relationship with the guys in the older spares shops.
The body was fairly soft and parts might be an issue.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, JMVV. Ja, the couple I've seen seem to have some rust 'issues'! Anyway, will have to weight that up. Thanks again.

We had one years ago, couldn’t sell it so my stepdad butchered it into a Bakkie. It looked odd and could hardly handle a 300kg load and had no tailgate. Was a tub with a cover. As he finished it someone offered him decent money and it was gone.

It looked odd like a 2 door sports truck.... but hey he had fun...:

Spares are scarce. And if memory serves the PCD was odd...
