How does one set up rear brakes when you are fighting against the differential

Not too sure what you mean. What make of car is it, and are you just trying to adjust the brakes?

It's on my 49 Ford with a 9 inch diff. I cannot seem to get the rear wheels to brake. When adjusting the shoes, it is difficult to know when to stop adjusting as you are also rotating the diff when you rotate the wheel.

When driving the car and you brake, it seems the brakes do not have the power to stop the car and also the diff.

I need this sorted as I have had a few close calls especially going downhill.

I do believe if I put the car in neutral as I start to bring the car to a stop is going to help.

Firstly, lets get the brakes adjusted. Tighten the adjustment until the wheel locks solid - so that you can't turn it. Then loosen the adjuster until the wheel turns freely. Do the same on the other side.

Use a vice grip to clamp the rear flexible hose - don't clamp it tight enough to damage it - just close it. Sit behind the steering wheel and put your foot on the brake. Holding the brake on, get somebody to remove the hose clamp. If the pedal drops, your brakes aren't adjusted properly.

Try that, then we'll take it from there.
