Yes they were. Ultimately they dominated the class against Skylines, RX7's and the like. It has to be seen in the context though that they were the only full factory entered cars competing against largely privateer teams (Johan Coetzee, Dick Sorenson, Ivor Raasch).

I dont have decent pics of them, just this one below. This was right in the beginning, one of its first races and when it was still somewhat down on power. No17, just visible behind the 911 Porsche.

The straight 6 Liftback did exist, I've also seen photos of it.

I believe it was built LHD due to the suspension they were running at the time.
