Some advice pls... about to buy a Cortina 3000gt
Hi, My name is Cyril... from Cape town. I have been in the market for a ford v6 (or v8) I have stumbled accross (what seems to be) original Cortina mk 3 - 3000gt. When I say original, I mean a car that was not converted to 3l. It was resprayed... I have looked the car over and under, the car seems VERY solid, straight and rust free.
Anybody know what I should look for to know that its definately an original? The interior is black vinyl... and everything looks good, door cards looks nice... not recovered. The cars licence and papers are in order...
The main thing that requires replacement is the tail lights.... its looks sad, faded... actually, it looks shitty.
Other than that, the guy wants me to hand over R40k for it... is it worth it?

Hi Cyril, welcome to the forum. I am biased, but at R40k I'd buy it to sit next to my MK3 v6 bakkie! I'm not 100% but I rememer a topic a while back about how factory GT's were 2lt & the 3lt was a Basil Green Perana conversion??? I think there was a standard 2.5lt v6 GT??? I'm sure some of the more experienced forum members will have better info for you. If it is a Perana I'd snap it up chop chop You never saw a Basil Green tag when you were inspecting it?

The Mk3 3000GT Cortina were built for a very short period in time, basically a one year only model.
AFAIK Ford SA introduced the Mk3 Cortina in mid 1971, with the 2000GT avaiable from at least Feb 1972, Basil Green then fitted an Essex V6 to it in 1972, to create the Cortina Perana. Thereafter Ford themselves stated producing the 3000GT from at least Sep 1973, and had changed to the XLE by Sep 1974.
It should be fitted with high backed bucket seats, and have full GT instrumentation with 4 gauges on the console.
You can check out the data plate numbers using this thread:

The 3000GT Cortina is pretty rare, so please if you buy it, keep it original, don’t fit a V8. If you don't buy it, please pass the details on here.
If it’s a real 3000GT, 40k is definitely worth it.

Thanks for the info... really appreciate it! The car does have the centre console (with 4 gauges) it has the black vinyl interior with black roof lining... I will have to go back for another look (to check the makers plate) will keep you all updated.

So from the infor garnered... the 3000gt's was first built by Basil Green (which, if done by Basil Green, would have a Basil Green / Perana identifying plate?)
And thereafter, the 3000gt was produced by Ford themselves?
One would assume, that the Basil Green version would be more desirable, which brings me to the question... how "sought after" are the 3000gt cortina's that were Ford produced?
Also, are there any differences between tha Basil Green 3000gt and the Ford produced 3000gt?

The Basil Green version is a Perana, the Cortina Mk3 Perana, and would have a plate identifying it as such.
The 3000GT is not a Perana, I would say a bit more 3000GT's were build than Perana's, but still much less than XLE's.
Neither are that much sought after, except by Ford enthusiasts, because so few were build, they are not very well known. The general public know what a Capri Perana is, or XR6 Cortina, but fewer look for a 3000GT.
If initially there were a few 3000GT Cortina's converted by Basil Green for Ford, before Ford had set up the tooling to manufacture a complete 3000GT, I am unaware of that. Pricing would likely fall in between the 2 models, and you would need the documentation to prove it.
