I can tell you, I had a Hudson Rambler with 3spd and overdrive on each gear! Awesome!! How many people ever used the overdrive in 1st and 2nd? Same situation! If all else fails! read the instructions!!!

I have been driving around in D2 for 6 months as long as I have had the car. The previous owner who shall remain nameless drove the vehicle for two years in D2. I was browsing through the manual last night and just happened to stumble on an interesting paragraph on the gears. It says something as follows. If you put the car into D2 it then only operates in 2nd and third gear. It skips out first totally and pulls off in second. I rushed out to the car at 11pm at night in my underpants and chucked the car into D1, and experienced a mind boggling sensation of first gear pull off. The cars performance compared to the previous six months was nothing less than scintillating. Please tell me why anyone would want a car to pull off in second to the exclusion of first.
Had to chuckle here: till late last year I had a 1967 Rambler American (Rogue in RSA) SW but the original AT 'disappeared' and I swapped in a 1972 232 AMC Six with its matching TorqueCommand (904 Mopar TorqueFlite with an AMC/Rambler V8/1972+ Six bellhousing).

The older Mercedes 123 series (maybe others as well) automatics have a similar setup. I have a 1982 230TE (station wagon). Normal pull off it is a slug, but if you put it in "1" and floor it it is quite a different experience - certainly not hair raising !! Slug on steroids.

Yes it was me that drove the car in second gear for two years until
I read the manual.Great minds think alike because if I didnt supply
the manual you to would never have discovered that first Gear.
What a difference it made,I could do burnouts with a straight six
buy mashing the pedal to the floor.

Yes 2nd gear pulloff is for snow.

W126 S class Mercedes also always pull of in 2nd in 'D'.

I at first thought my first S Class 380SE was a slug. But using manual override 1, 2, 3, D and mashing the pedal to the floor opens a whole new world of performance. Then later doing the same with the nex S Class 420SE it was awesome how fast such a big tank could accelerate.

Watch all the autobox owners now go off to try the other funny positions in their gear levers :D :D

Maybe the newer C4's but; the 1965-66 Mustangs would start out in second gear while in D2.
