Rassie, Ja, I wasn't impressed. I looked at a car a while ago for someone, and I'm sure that guy was the same oke was the brother of the owner then.

The one is Hillcrest is fucked.. They had to jump start it and run it from a oil can with petrol in, panels don't line up, interior was pretty poor. Just way too much work for me..

Rassie, how do you tell if it's a 302 or 351?

I came from 1978 with my first 1968 Fairlane 289 V8 my late Dad gave to me when I was 18!!
It never stop. I had over 100+ V8's.
Just to tell you where I came from.
I open more than 200 Ford V8's.
The original 302C and 351C was not in S.A. from Australia as OZ was never importent in our history classes!
The first 351C was in the 1970 Ford Mustang from the USA. We never had any idea Australia was the Fairmont supplier. No Internet and cell phones. Apartheid we did call it!

I will take it slow as most members got no idea what I am talking about!
See the picture as I take you into history of my time. I speak on behalf of myself!
Picture 1970 Ford Mustang, 351C, 2V with a 4 speed top loader gearbox and 259:1 diff ratio. Could do 70mph in first gear.
The engine paint was blue.

I did buy a 1975/6 Fairlane 500 from the Major of Viljoenskroon for R.1750. I had to pay Volkskas bank is 2 years +/- R.230pm. I was working on the mines close to Klerksdorp and I was an Electrician under ground. Very good money even as an apprentice.
This was my first Australian V8 351C with original orange rocker covers. It was a cool car and R.240 Tiger Tornado mags did its job.
It was very fast for an auto and 200kph with 4 guys was no problem as we were stupid and young.

For a Cleveland it is almost impossible to tell externally, they have the same engine block, the best way would be to measure the stroke.
302 = 3" stroke
351 = 3.5" stroke

If it still has the original engine paint on:

"302 XA thru XC,, blue with red rocker covers.

302/4.9L XD/XE,, black with silver rocker covers and 4.9 sticker on RHS rocker cover.

351 2V XY thru early XB,, blue with orange rocker covers.

351 4V XW thru early XB,, blue with blue rocker covers.

351 2V with 2 brl carb late XB,, blue with red rocker covers.

351 2V with 4brl carb late XB/XC,, blue with blue rocker covers

351/5.8L XD/XE,, black with silver rocker covers and 5.8 sticker on RHS rocker cover."

IndianaJones is correct as the 302C and 351C got the same firing order. As I have seen it still had the red orange rocker covers and will also not leave black lines on a rar road. Changing the cranc and conrods make it a 351C. 302C got 99% a FS engine no.

As to an answer to the modern cars performance compared to old classics well that's all very well and true BUT build a nice 550-600hp small block, Chev or Ford etc with the right brakes and upgrades to an old classic then no modern car comes close :D OR a nice modern Chev Lumina with an abnormally :lol: aspirated LS motor and well then it has character and soul that the German and Jap cars don't have
