Contacting owner?
Contacting owner?
Hi, I'm the proud owner of one of your Fairmont GT's. If you use the FairmontGT.com site in oz then you'll know me as gonzogt.
I purchased it in 2004. I'm interested in contacting the original owner for a chat and just talking about the car's history. I was wondering if any of forum members here might know him.
His name is Andrew Clarke and lives (or lived) in Dinwiddie, a suburb of Johannesburg i believe. The car was a red '71 GT, auto, air, p/s. Custom number plates 351 GTR-GP
Any help would be appreciated. Of course if the previous owner is known but not interested then i'll respect his wishes.

Sorry I only saw this today - if you haven't found him yet Dinwiddie is a suburb of Germiston, not Johannesburg - quite a distance away. If you have no joy, let me know. I worked the Germiston area for 10 years as a rep for Wynns, and I know a lot of okes in the motor trade.

Doug, do you have any news on the people who drove in the Wynn's racing teams during the '70's? I am particularly interested in Willie Ferguson who raced in F5000 over that time.

Fairlane, as far as I know there were only two drivers who raced under the Team Wynns banner. Willie Fergusson raced the Surtees TS5 and then Surtees TS8. Spencer Schultz, who was racing the Lola T142, then took over the TS5 from Fergusson.
The TS5 went over to the UK where it was restored in 2003.
The TS8 stayed in this country and eventually was sold to Willie Hepburn who chopped up to get out the bag tanks! Some parts were also used on a modified Escort!! There was nothing left of the car.
The Lola T142 seemed to pass through Anthony Corin and now may be in New Zealand.
Of course the Scheckter brothers raced for Team Wynns in F Ford.

Willie Ferguson
Sorry to tell you that Willie died about two/three years ago - contracted cancer of the throat and he couldn't eat, all that sort of thing.Fairlane 500 wrote:Doug, do you have any news on the people who drove in the Wynn's racing teams during the '70's? However, Bobby Olthoff, Jackie Pretorius, Clarry Taylor, Spencer Shultze all worked for Wynns. Jackie is still up and running - I'll get hold of him next week and get all the facts. Of course Joe Putter was the MD and also ran the Gunston Team in the good old days - he knew more about the history of cars and drivers than anybody I know. Unfortunately he also passed away three years ago, taking all his knowledge with him.

Interesting little thread this, about Wynn's. It's incredible what comes out of this site.
Doug, I also have an interest in the Wynn's scene. When you worked for them, did you bump into any interesting people involved in our sport? Is there a chance of getting any pictures from that era and posting them here?

I forgot to include in the list of guys who worked for Wynns South Africa's first world champion in motor sport, Tony Jeffries, who won the Formula V championship when Pontius was a pupil pilate! I spoke to Jackie Pretorius, but he doesn't seem to be able to help much - he has not been the same since he and his wife were attacked in their home one morning in October 2003 and she was murdered. He did tell me that Tony is now in Oz, and perhaps Spencer Shultze's ex-wife Elna also has some history pics. Will follow up over the next few days and see what we can dredge up. First prize would be Joe Putter's son who must have inherited thousands of pictures. Will phone him tomorrow.Hi-Fi wrote:Interesting little thread this, about Wynn's. Doug, that's shocking news! I didn't know that JP's wife was murdered. I think everybody heard about John McNicol being killed on his smallholding.
All that aside, it would be good to find out about the Wynn's story. I remember Tony Jeffries winning the FV world championship way back then. I didn't realise he was part of the Wynn's team. I thought he may have been in OZ because of my contacts with Basil Van Rooyen.
