Capri XL-R 3000GT

Post by TdL351GT » Sun 09 Dec 2007, 21:06

Hi all,

In my ongoing search for spares and interesting cars, I came across this Capri. It has never been sprayed, still in original condition. Complete car...fitted with the Meissner V6 conversion complete with 4brl holley. Owner has some weird idea about the car being a XL R, but according to our historian, John, it is not so uncommon. Cant find your mail John. Please comment.
Very rare car indeed being a XL R and Meissner conversion at the same time
Needless to say...NOT FOR SALE

regards

Unreal ! That is as rare as a V6 Perana. For some strange reason very little is spoken about these Meisner cars including the MK2 Cortine but which they used a 2 door shell.

When last have you guys even seen a 1600 GT with similar striping still on the car ? Seems to be a culture here that once cars go through the sprayshops that is the end of the stripes. The stripes thing to me as well as guages, widened Rostyles, turned up sliced exhaust tips is what reminds us we're in South Africa !

WOW! Never ever did I imagine that I would ever seen pics of a 3 liter with the Meissner conversion, will dig out the road test and post up some figures next weekend....Please tell me the owner knows how rare it is and want to keep it orginal....would be a crying shame if it was used as a custom project...

TdL you certainly know where to find rare cars...... :D

From my email to Theuns:

First the Ford bits:

GT XLR is a standard Capri designation almost right from the start. GT XLRs were available in 1300 (kent) 1600 (kent), 1700 (v4 France mainly), 2000 (v4), 3000 (V6 essex), and later on 2300 (v6 cologne, france again) and 2600 (v6 cologne).

I am almost certain that GT XLRs were available off the floor in SA - ask the okes with old CAR magazines to check the pricelist.

The GT stripe and black bonnet panels are a standard Ford design.

GT XLR was the top spec GT - you could also get GT XL. And you could get plan XLRs and plain XLs too. Peranas wre officially plain XLs, but were more often that not closer to XLR spec, but always had XL badges.

Now the Meissner bits - more interesting:
The Meissner manifold and 4 barrel holley (an possibly other bits cams? head work?) was a 'standard' Meissner kit. That means two things - very well engineered, and today very rare.

I think Jacques (ZAperana) knows of someone with a Meissner Capri.

Jacques or Henry (HenryK) may be able to help you more on the Meissner information.

Just a rare weekday visit from me....as an aside good day for me I got my degree in accounting science...

Back to Meissner, the kit consisted of a Holley carb, differant intake, the same airfilter as fitted to the Perana V8, Meissner MV1 cam, far as I know heads were standard but the cam did increase engine range.

Exhaust may have been modified too.

Henry please correct me if I have made any mistakes.

My friend has a 1600 Capri with a Meissner cam, car goes very well but having driven it not sure what one could rev it to because at 6000 rpm it seems to just want to go......

Hi Guys.

Very nice car.

As said rare to find one with original stripes after all these years.

The "R" designation was what was called the "Rally Pack"

Only difference from standard XL was black striping and black bonnet and very rare high back seats.

Also like the Lucas square 8 perion spotlights below the front bumper of this verhicle.

About a year ago saw an original white 1600GT Capri in Paarl with original "R" pack. Car was owned by an elderly lady, blue rinsed hair and all. It had belonged to her late husband from new and was definately NOT FOR SALE.

Back to the Meissner modifications.

Car magazine did a test of a V6 Capri with similar Meissner mods.

4 Barrel Holley and suitable intake, MV1 cam, nice big pancake aircleaner etc.

On the subject of V6 Capris.

One of the neatest ones I have seen for many a year was owned by Arnold Lambert earlier the year.

Car was metallic blue with black vinyl roof.

100% original car with John Love Motors Bulawayo sticker in the rear window.

Car was unrestored and in really mint condition.

He sold it to a collector in Somerset West for R65 000 I believe.

I agree with much of what Henry says, expect for one things, the cam used was a MV2 item, first developed for use on the Zodiac and Zephyr cars... :D

After much searching I found what I was looking for namely the specs on the Meissner V6 Capri.

In short the kit comprised of the following
- 4 barrel Holley Carburetor
- adapter plate for the inlet manifold
- Meissner MV2 Camshaft
- Ford Muscle Power Air Cleaner
- Different tappet covers, these were however optional
Performance specs were impressive but what’s also amazing is that this modified car has 20% better fuel economy than the standard Capri V6.

The modifications clearly enabled the engine to rev better, max revs being increased from the std cars 4750 to 5600 rpm.

Top speed moved up from 174 km/h to 195 km/h, the 0-100 time improved from 10.5 seconds to 8 seconds, a dramatic improvement. Fuel economy for the Meissner car was a very impressive 9.1 liters per 100 km’s, a significant improvement on the std V6.

The stripes on this example pictured were also I believe part of an option pack offered, what my dad seems to remember seems to agree with this, of course the could be part of the R pack, though I cant find mention anywhere of this pack being formally offered in South Africa, not in the price lists or even mentioned when the Capri was launched.]

All in all a very rare car that deserves to be preserved in original condition!

Same here...would be a special car to have!!

Some more pics of the car. Note the lip spoiler in front, and the panel covering rear lights. Would this have part of the rally pack as well? Lip spoilers I have seen before..but the rear panel never.
I asked the guys to hold in place and then to hold away so we can see.

And I'm sure the car had the high back seats in front...and in my stupidity I thought 'what a pity...they changed the seats' Will go back one day and get more info and pics. Owner said he has a certificate they issued back in the hey days at Kyalami doing 127mph through the traps.

And yes ZA...he knows he's got something special and will keep it original.
