The Meissner Thread
Re: The Meissner Thread
Would have been nice if he had won.
But no, he finished 3rd behind the 2 Peranas but he kept them honest and chased them to the flag.

Ja, those were the days. I remember that race with all the okes hanging out sideways in the wet.
Re: The Meissner Thread
hello ,new to this ,and its an old post.I have a meissner ohc kit running --ready for my mk1 cortina, its done about 10 hrs on homemade testbed will need rejetting for the road. Doing a megajolt system to it ---as my home modified nissan distributor cant match the way you can tweak the timing parameters, which is a big plus as it will help compensate for some of the engines compromises in the build up(I hope). Are there any more out there running? If so have you solved cambox to head leakage ? its about the same level/flow as an old xflow with bad cork gasket--no-- even fancy space age sealants DONT work--just found a bottle of the old "brown goo" gum/shellac maybe this will work.Heard /read all the short comings about these --can anyone who actually ran/runs one give their input, I have tried to address some of these by using HP oil pump , jack shaft has machined oil groove --BDA style--checked alinement of oil flow passages --head to cambox ,the cam rifle drilling and bearing feeds.Blocked all the redundent oil feeds ,good quality 20/50 mineral oil and checked v/spring pressure not to much.DONE lots more to it as well its now 1790cc on steel crank 82.5 mm, (nicked out of a diesel )4 bike carbs 38mm keihans .NOT built for racing--just road use--everyday hopefully!!!

Have you tried Loctite 518? It can seal my BDA's cam carrier to head (gasket deletion was Cosworth bulletin instruction mind you!) and my YB's tappet cover to head with no gasket or "other stuff" Anaerobic sealer which can take the heat, oil and gaps up to .25mm if I remember.

Thanks i ll give it a try, just had to order it --local motor factors --dont stock to much these days.Heres something to drool and dribble over --sorry you cant seem to down load his pics off the site. But if any one could afford to build a true replica of Willie Meissner s FVA engine check out DAVID GATHERCOLE ---- truely stunning its pure automotive porn!!!!!

Re: The Meissner Thread
Hi Madflow. Please try Wurth D300. It is non hardening. Some in the know also use it on VW casings. Cheers!
Re: The Meissner Thread
Thanks--tried the wurth --not sucessful--at the moment i m thinking of "lapping " in the two mating surfaces---not going to be easy doing the head gasket rail/surface with the valves in .A guy who builds old style Formula/1600 engines said something about pressure differences across the castbox mating surfaces, when bolted down---which kind of explains why --but still doesn t solve it.Cheers.
Re: The Meissner Thread
well it seems like i am the "Last Mohican "no one else running a meissner kit----solved my oil weep around the cambox---had to use the old shellac based stuff as my local spares outlet forgot to order the loctite product ,and i cant delay any more. Also managed to fit 2 new camshaft seals in place--so no leaks there now.Had to make up a new inlet manifold for the down draft motor bike carbs i am now using ,my other set took to leaking fuel around the bowls --nitrile gaskets have been flattened down one to many times and was running them at a much steeper angle from standard--so float angle and flooding problems. As soon as i work out the downsizing of the pics i will post some up--(they keep getting lost/deleted).
Re: The Meissner Thread
Regarding the ohc kit s tendency to wear away the lobes very quickly ---i had installed the KENT VS5 (single) springs at 34mm --instead of the recomended 32mm hight for xflows--after checking with KENTCAMS they calculated seat pressure to be around 68lbs instead of 110 or so --but no bad thing as this gave a softer run in and they recomended to only shim up the hight by 1mm --as the ohc cam in road use does nt need any more. The cam specs and springs will give a working range up to about 6500/7000 rpm--which would be enough for the road and the longer stroke crank combination--plus cast pistons and all on a" factory " balance still.---hope this can be of use to anyone wanting to get a kit going instead of gathering dust on the shelf.
Re: The Meissner Thread
does anyone have the Basil Green overhead cam kit -- he only had one made apparently for some show.
