What happened to the Cortina Peranas?
Re: What happened to the Cortina Peranas?
So guys, you have established for me that there are one or two beautiful examples of the original road-going Cortina Perana still running and being proudly looked after. What price would one pay for a car like that, if one became available?

Re: What happened to the Cortina Peranas?
From my side I have no idea, most people here have good ideas on the values of cars that are quite regularly up for sale, like chev ss's capri peranas and fairmont gts. I have never even seen a cortina perana for sale.
Yes we did build muscle cars in RSA!!!!

As stated the ex Olthoff Gunston Cortina Perana was purchased by Windsor Garage for Koos Swanepoel to race at Killarney in 1970. In Windsor colours Koos had a lot of success with the car. Towards the end of 1970 Koos took the car back to Kyalami twice and each time won beating the Keizan Ford 20M Coupe and the 2 Monaros. He also had a win at the old Welkom circuit in the car.
From Koos the car was then acquired by Robbie Smith and then returned to Kyalami where it spent it's last competetive years.
I have also heard that the cars remains have been found in Jhb but in very poor condition and not worth restoring. That's why Alan Poulter proceeded to rather build a replica of the Gunston car.
I hope we see this Poulter replica at Zwartkops and Killarney during the Piper Classic festeval next month.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've always thought that the Cortina Perana was a beautiful car.
In fact, hopefully we will be debuting our Anglia that we are preparing, at that meeting.

Yes, that car was superb and very successful. Remember the way Koos and Peter Gough would dice together, with Gough driving the Ted Lanfear Capri V6?

Still got the scrapbook I made from Argus Production cars in those days.
Hi Fi are you aware of the Classic Car meeting at Killarney tonight? Probably starting about 19h00 till late.
Suspect it is to get some clarity on the controversial rules changes for this year.

Alan Poulter's replica is an outstanding example of what can be done and still goes fast enough to be apreciated. It would be nice if this Meisnner MK2 Cortina replica is built, that it be built in the same spirit of the Gunston Cortina replica as well as the replica Meisner Escort. The heavily modified cars in old "gowns" are beginning to lose charisma.
The thing is that it is fact that certain motors are valuable and difficult on spares. But then at the least restrict modifications limiting even a larger size motor to similar horsepower of the smaller engined originals. This in turn requires less other mods that go with monster motors. If bigger motors allowed are restricted to similar horsepower, they still most probably score on torque.

I would be interested in buying one of those Cortinas. Another Ford that is very scarce in the Australian Fairlane. That is a car which has become a collectors piece.
