1965/66 Opel Rekord L Rally GMSA
Re: 1965/66 Opel Rekord L Rally GMSA
Just when all is supposed to be OK! I'm having starter issues for some time now and took out the starter to check why the Bendix does not kick-in immediately! I replaced the solenoid as had cracks in the head! I fitted a new solenoid and tested the starter on the bench! Unit works perfectly! Problem The starter does not engage the ring gear! It just clicks as if it is against the gear! It does not want to mesh! Took it out, tested again, working well, Seems to jam when fitted!! Can somebody give me advice as to possible answer to my problem please!

I suspect the coat of paint at the housing is causing a poor connection! I cant believe that the starter is so strong and takes immediaterly! and when fitted, not alive!! Fitted ignition switch with separate wiring and its perfect!! on the vice! and clicks only when fitted! Will try to remove all the paint down to the metal! Try again! Will take pic ASAP! Need to wash! Spot and Fog lights fitted!

Check the earth strap from engine to body. I had a situation. Once where my clutch cable became hard and the car did not want to start when hot. Cold engine no problem. End of the day the woven earthstrap from body to engine was bad. The engined earthed through the clutchcable which melted the plastic liner in the cable which did not work well with a moving cable. Removed the started numerous times and tested it. Worked fine. New earth and cluth cable and everything was fine.

Played with shims and the Extra earth cable! stronger current and the starter took better! The shims allowed the Bendix to engage without clicking!Johann66 wrote: ↑Tue 19 Dec 2017, 15:06Thanks for the advice! Fitted extra earth cable to engine block! Also fitted spacers to starter! This is a real Barn Find in Mpumalanga!! This is the 1966 Opel Rekord L that carried the first 36DCD Weber and inlet manifold, Also carried disk brakes and booster All that this car requires is a good valet and the repair of the driver's seat.
No Rust or respray required, This car is pristine and every thing works! All that is required is a battery and tyres
Look and enjoy the as found look. Going for a wash tomorrow
20 September 2013!!! Bright Eyes!! Still busy after all these years!!

BARGAIN BARGAIN!!!!
RESTORED 1968 OPEL REKORD
1.9 STRAIGHT 4 motor. Manual column shift.
ONLY R60 000 (Slightly Negotiable)
Vehicle is 99.9% completed, front to back, even factory spec colour. License is up to date but must still go for roadworthy. Just shorts suspension bushes and under carriage must be painted. Besides that, bumper to bumper, you name it, it's been done. Owner has spent more than the asking price on the vehicle and has the invoices to back it up. Owner has fallen ill, so sadly he wont be finishing it. His reason for not painting the under carriage yet is to show there is no rust hidden. This car is clean as a whistle, a real beaut and a steal at this price.
