67 Mustang GTA 390 Fastback Restoration project begins

68 vette, I bought my 1st mustang in 1998 a coupe, as a young 20 year old probably like you. I knew nothing except that muscle cars are cool, i knew that at least. I could not afford a new one so i bought a runner but it had a lot of work. I drove it like that between breakdowns etc. it was a jol even in the condition it was, some of my best memomories where in that car in its "beater condition". I decided on day that i had enough and stripped the entire car down in the double garage. I mean I knew nothing about cars or muscle cars just the basics frim growing up with bikes and my 1st cars was a clunker so i guess i learnt a small bit frim that. But in hindsight i knew nothing and ignorance of youth and enthusiasm i just stripped it down.

I sent it for blasting and painting and thats when I met Rassie, we spoke I said to him I want to learn and every sat and sunday and public holiday for just under 2 years I went to his house and he put me to work on my car, I was his apprentice so to speak, he taught me and helped me and we rebuilt and assembled the car. Rassie I learnt a lot from you my friend!

Since then I have worked on other classics of mine. One of my biggest frustrations was panelbeaters/paint shops. I was never happy with the work or the time they took. I can actually thank these guys as I said to myself that I am not prepared to accept my cars sitting for months before they start and then when i put pressure the mad rush and poor workmanship. So I found a experienced panelbeater to come to me on weekends to work with me and teach me. So for 2years solid on most sat and sun I learnt and did the hard yards. Sanding, stripping to metal. Bodyfiller work, primer painting, blocking gettung cars ready for paint. I am learning to paint baseciat clearcoat now and have been practising on small projects like coke fridge, petrol pumps.

I wont be painting this car myself but I will be there in the booth showing my painter where the overspray must go, checking and learning.

My advice is you got to have the passion and desire and then give up your time to feed that passion with lots of hard work!!

Brennan I agree 110% with you on this, I am going the same route/procedure with my 58 Apache, as I have been let down and to often seen the lack of workmanship from the panel shops.
Great build progress on your project, very meticulous and to the T like it should be.

The 67 black one was my gift from Brannan for the help. I just fit mags and a fast coat of black. My oldest son Lance was still small. Rassie.

Wow Rassie that was a long time ago when you see how small Lance was !

I wonder whatever happened to that Mustang you got from me, did it ever get finished after you sold it ?
I remember I found that coupe in a scrap yard in Qwa Qwa near Harrismith, was owned by a black guy, I bought it as a parts car for my 67 coupe I was building at the time. The parts I used was a door, the manual top loader gearbox and the deluxe aluminium interior trim and overhead console. Cant remember what I paid for it but it might have been R5000 back in around 2001..

RHS rear quarter panel all stitched welded in and started grinding down welds

Then from there back to old school metal pin and filing to get the metal as straight as possible before primer :

Next we stripped off all paint, sealers and sound deadners in the boot until the metal was clean and surface rust free :

We will revisit a few areas back there to straighten out a few things but next we will move onto the floor

Ok so this is what I am working with.. the front Rhs floor we have cut out when we started the restoration. The LHS is not so bad but I will replace. From the front seat mounts backwards we are all good except for a small bit of pitting and a tiny bit of rust through the floor about 2x1cm in size. The rest is all perfect.

Now I am sitting with the dilemma of do I patch whats a problem or do I replace the entire floor. If you recall I ordered a entire floor from Scott Drake just in case. My 1st thoughts was just to patch whats broken but now that I got the new floor out and looking at this beauty I am leaning towards replacing the entire floor. Decisions decisions any thoughts guys ???

Reminds me of my lost forum mate Nick (Neek) he got tired of being stuffed around by service providers and started researching and doing everything himself. His carb rebuild had me in stitches.

But it's very rewarding seeing the fruit of your own hands.
