Re: 67 Mustang GTA 390 Fastback Restoration project begins
Hey Brennan
I think do the mods you want to give it more power and driveability, but keep it mostly original, Don't go the Eleanor route, that's only a movie car anyway.
at the end of the day it is a serious collector original car so a few decent mods and upgrades to bring it to more modern standards wont detract from value, it is your car anyway, besides as I said before you will more than likely keep the original parts you remove so that's cool, wake up that old 390 and burn some rubber, the Mustang needs to be driven as much as possible, don't worry about fuel, it dropped by over 60c a litre last night, every bit helps
Cant wait to keep an eye on this build, one of my favourite looking Mustangs for sure

Howzit guys
Ok I have started shipping the car down this weekend.
This is how she looks to date in my garage : Body is not too bad, biggest problem is that some idiot decided the back quarter panels needed to be flared out. I will need to repair that. Looking for some advice here on the best way to do that, so you fabricator guys, what do you think my best options are here?
There are body repair panels from the entire rear quarter including the roof section above the vents, quarter panels from the top of fender "hip line" or patch panels that would require say 20cm weld around curve of the wheel opening. My thoughts are to try and minimise the amount of welding and the smaller repair the better ? Rear end is in good shape, no rust or damage in the boot or rear, roof looks good, Interior body is rust free, dont you love that red crushed velvet interior panels?? Foor panels look in good shape I have decided I am going factory original numbers matching parts, colours, details etc on this car. So I will be painting and detailing engine, underbody, suspension, drive train etc according.
So next steps are to list all parts needed and start buying...
Then strip out rest of car, suspension and steering is left to do.
Weld up a frame with wheels so we can get her to move around and get underneath.
Then in the new year to find blaster who can soda blast underneath, inside and external down her in Durban who I can trust. I have a few I will need to check out.

Ok did some work on the FB over the holidays,
Not much but a start.. pulled her out, had a bit of a frame welded up so she is high off the ground but can still wheel in and out of garage.
Stripped off all bolt on parts, now we just left with the body shell. Had a good look at what we working with and it seems the floor pan has been patch repaired before with a plate over the passenger side floor pan. These mustangs were prone to water getting into the cowl and down onto the carpet and then water into the floor pan by your feet. So both sides have a bit of rust. back floor pan also some pinholes and pitting. The Kimberly boys also decided it would be better to have a handbrake on the gearbox tunnel than on the dash so they hacked a hole in there. probably to so lekker handbrake turns right ??
Lower firewall also got a bit of rust but easily fixed.
I have made the decision to replace the entire floor pan as I am doing a concours original restoration here and will be buying this from Scott drake as I dont want weld in patch seams all over the floor pan. I want anybody working underneath the car to say wow this thing is straight !

Age considered the floor pan doesn't look too bad, considering the lives some of these cars had its amazing some survived at all!

Floor pan is not too bad but its not perfect either, we have cut out old patch done on passenger side about A3 size. Drivers side is better but not perfect.
I will take some photos ever weekend and upload.
The good news is today I have spent a large sum of $$ on body parts, all new suspension parts, power steering and brakes. These parts will ship via sea freight and I will probably get them in March. This will be everything to complete the body and sheetmetal, complete underside of car including all new brakelines and hoses, drums, callipers, disks, all new suspension control arms, bushings, sway bars, shocks, power steering lines and hardware you name it. Even spent R8000 on bolt kits for the body panels and chassis Each part is packaged and labeled separately so you got the right bolt for the right part. I must be mad but I figure the time wasted trying to find the right bolts and then going do 101 trips to the nut and bolt shop its well worth it ! I am now excited..

Whilst I am on the underside of the car, what you guys think ?
I am going the concours original route right, so that requires I paint the underside of the car in red oxide with overspray on the sides like they did back in the factory.
here are some pics of concours original restorations in the USA of what the guys have done. The question is do I intentionally crate overspray ??
