Hello...
Right so this weekend we did a bit of experimenting. We will be moving over to the next phase of the project soon from fabrication, panel fitment and filler work to that of refining the bodywork with MS primers or high build primers and then block sanding it all so its laser straight.
This car is not going to see much dirt roads, but one thing that bothers me are cars which have dark paint and then these white stone chips showing through from the primers underneath the base coat.
So I have been doing a bit of homework in this regard and I have found RM paints do a black High Solids primer called perfect fill. Then PPG do a dark Grey. Talking to my local PPG stockist they recommended a PPG product called Selemix. The beauty with this product is that you can tint it to any colour you like. Its a high build primer with a 4:1:1 mix ratio and is avail in a matte or even a 80% gloss.
So I had them mix me up a sample of Selemix in a dark green which is close to my original factory Dark Moss Green that I will be applying.
I went with the gloss option as my thinking is that you would easily see any waves or imperfections in this dark green gloss.
So we shot the Selemix on the door as a test using the 4:1:1 mix ratio and using a 1.8mm tip primer gun which delivers a LOT of paint. We applied 3 heavy coats. Given the mix ratio and the large tip of the gun it gave a bit of orange peel but in my experience with MS/ high build primers this is kind of normal when laying it down heavy like this. Anyway its all going to be block sanded so its really a non issue.
I was quite chuffed to see some Green paint finally on the car
My concern from the outset was "but how will it sand" because high build primers are designed to sand and chalk off easily. Given the gloss I was a bit worried. Anyway I blocked down a small section after 24 hrs and I did find that the paper clogs up a bit. I moved over to wet sanding and it helped with the clogging quite a bit.
I will let it dry a bit more and on the weekend will give the blocking another go. Maybe I need to go with the matt version will need to give this some more thought.
Anyway this is what it looks like :
