Fern GT

Post by FairmontGT » Sun 21 Oct 2007, 21:36

I started disassembling my Fairmont GT that is supposed to be Fern colour this afternoon. It went quite quick with no major surprises, and I think I am about halfway. Its one of the nicest Sunday afternoons I have ever had. Nice to see something happening to the cars. It drives me mad seeing cars around me that need work every day and not progressing with them.

After I removed the vinyl top (the car isnt supposed to have one), I saw the original green colour. Its actually very nice.

Does anybody know of upholsterers that can re-upholster the seats with vinyl to look exactly like the original ones?

Good luck Tiaan, and remeber you can never take enough pics. Dont forget to make notes as well. Stripping is the easy and quick part of the job. Its fun and feels like you taking leaps and bounce in a restoration project. Keep the momentum going as you go along and make it a point to do everyday a bit. Laat waai!!

Stripping is especially easy if a lot of the clips are already missing. Im gonna have a struggle to replace all the small missing things.

I also find it funny that there is not 1 thing in the car that still has all its screws. Ok Im lying there was actually one of the rear chrome trim pieces that had all 3. But thats the only thing!

Luckliy everything piece of trim etc. is there, its just not properly held in place.

Thing is with persons that do specialised jobs, is when you find a good one stick to that. there are many upholsterers in this town. My aproach is first can you do this job like I will pay for. First the quality of service and if the cost is reasonable a bonus. Previous cheaper quotes have cost me trebble. Worse is a poor upholstry job can ruin everything else. There are two sore points by me with restorations. Upholstry and bodywork. This upholsterer John refers to did his appyship in the airforce years ago so he's from the old school. That job on John's Capri's seats have won him all our work we'll be sending !

Paint/bodywork we nearly went ahead a few years ago and accepted a R 6500 quote to spray my brother's Can Am. That with us stripping everything and re-assembling including us removing bulk of paint on car. I then saw that the modern Panelbeater/sprayshop has the resources to do a good job, but working on classics where there will be spots of bother is just not of economic worth to them time related. So instead we invested in equipment and decent materials from undercoat to finnish for less than that. Labour is us, but then again that is part of the joy's and pains of classics. The problems I noticed in some panel shops is that they are good, owners were god in their day, but now they manage staff many of which it is just an income, wash their hands and go home. Not their car too, just a job ! I estimate a decent spray job with quality material now would cost on the way to 20 K.

Here are some pics of the car stripped - we took out the engine and gearbox yesterday so its very close to going in for the body work.

Still need to screw some small things out and take out the windscreen and rear window as well as petrol tank.

I'd imagine the car will go back to that beautifull metalic green you found under the vinyl top ?
