Hi guys
I would like to throw some ideas around and need feed back good, bad ugly and rude, your opinion is appricated.

I want my 1948 stylemaster panelvan to be my daily driver.

Option 1
Jag front and back
Jag steering and braking
Ezzi wiring harness
Isuzu diesel motor
New wheels, dropped a little, and drive.
Phase one is defiantly not going to be a body of restoration.
Been there done that got the tshirt (58 Apache 3600)

I would rather put a petrol engine in, but it needs to be economical.

The Jag front subframe is damn near plug 'n' play on many 1954 down Chevy passenger cars. I wouldn't bother with the Jag rear suspension to be honest but I'd def swap in a modern open driveline to get away from that torque tube nonsense.

Engine: def some species of LSx with a matching tranny complete with the computer controls............

Here is My 2 Cents
Suspension seeing as she is so clean, I would go with a nearer setup to get a Jag suspension and refurb and get new rubbers etc is gonna cost a bit of money, however you an i have spoken a simple Tubular Corvette C4 with a nice weld in Crossmember for the from and a triangulated 4 link in the rear with a 8.8 or 9 inch would be a good setup
I have a nice set of the C4 for you already so PM me to discuss

then motorwise why not get a LS5.3 GM Cutout and if you wanna stay away from the electronics part stick with a carb intake setup to keep it oldschool otherwise a full EFI LS motor
EZI Wiring good harness and EZI to install
With regard to you possible looking at diesel what not look at a 3.0L TDI motor that out of a SUV as opposed to a bakkie the have been better optimised for better consumption as opposed to a more torquey motor

this is my 2 cents

I have had a similar idea, Darren, didn't follow through though.

See topic here:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19140

But in your case, cost, must be a consideration, after all you just laid down R195000 on a running and driving panelvan.
The cost of an engine and suspension conversion can be prohibitive.

A rebuilt Isuzu KB280 diesel engine is around R20k, a more modern 3.0L D-Teq engine, maybe R35k or more.
And in the end, no matter how impressive the torque or economy, one has to consider that a diesel engine just can't give you that feeling the burble of a V8 can.

There are a lot of petrol engine options, easiest and cheapest V8 may be a Lexus V8 at around R17k, but then you are crossdressing.
A rebuilt GM 350 is probably around R40k.
Other members might be more up to date on the cost of a the GM 5.3 or LS engines.

A Jag suspension swap can go up to R40k.
A nice set of wheels can go up to R25k.

Add it all up, and I'm wondering why didn't you just start with a cheaper project vehicle in the first place.

Why not just drive the panelvan as is? If the 4.1L is tired, maybe just rebuilt it, along with the carb. You can buy a lot of petrol with the money you are going to spend converting the van.

All is subjective. How much of the work you can do yourself? If you have the money and/or skills go for it. I still believe it is a good idea, and it will certainly be a unique daily driver.

Thanks guys, great input.

For the last 10 years my daily driver was a Merc VITO panel, and now a VW transporter, reliable and fuel efficient.
These little babies cost R300k+ new

I don't know what my budget is because I don't really know, what I can do.
I want wheels I can jump in start, drive and get milk in, not spend 5 minutes like a fighter pilot doing checks before I can leave home.

My apache 58 3600 has a V8, and the fairlane 500 has a Newley built stroker, so I have my bases covered on the burning rubber, V8 rumble, and smell of gas fumes.

If it's going to cost the same to put a fuel efficient motor as a V8, then I'm going for fuel effiency, I would like it to be my daily driver for the next 10 years.
If the answer is to buy a crashed modern diesel Isuzu and do a body transplant, then that would be the answer.
