and here we go again!
Dismantled Saturday a.m.
Both heads taken to a state of the art engineering firm - dips and curves of 3-4 thou near the water jacket holes and one of 6 thou on both heads at the extreme edges - where you wouldn't normally go looking for discrepancies. So, couple that with head gaskets of dubious quality from USA and there's the pressure leak into cooling system.
Skimmed both heads to 6 thou.
Race head gaskets. Fel-Pro 1011-1's.
Re-plumbed cooling system again - the the way it's supposed to be.
First signs are temp staying normal - no loss of water - sounds spot on.
Test run tomorrow but looking good.
Here's a good rule of thumb - NEVER believe anything an engineer tells you when works been done on your parts - unless you know him well. Take the parts to be tested on CNC machines before you rebuild. Will save you lots of bucks and a few sleepless nights.
My engine builder has worked tirelessly to restore good order and sanity to my situation.
It looks as if Cinderella will go to the Ball at last. Mind you it's only Wednesday..............................

A friend of mine just bought a Capri 280 from me (well 6 months ago) and the SA import charges are £9,000gbp that's 102,888.08 ZAR.Gavin RS wrote:

Cheers mate, well done

I wouldn't even dare to arrive at Durban or PE in the Perana and say, 'I'm just here for 2 weeks' as I'd probably have a kidney and a lung surgically removed.

Hi Chris
Don't know how you friend managed to get the Capri into S A, as I thought import of used cars was banned.
I know cars older than 40 years can be imported as "classics" but not a 25 year old Capri.
How did he manage that?

* Customs duty = 36% (motor cars more than 20 years old are subject to 20% customs duty)
* Ad valorem customs duty (based on a sliding scale depending on the value of the vehicle, with a minimum of 0.75% and a maximum of 20%)
* Value-added tax (VAT) = 14%
As an example, the cumulative duties and taxes payable on a car with a value of approximately R200 000 are ±70% of the market value. All vehicles with a value for ad valorem customs duty purposes of less than R130 000 do not pay ad valorem customs duty on importation into South Africa.
If the original purchase invoice is not available, three written valuations must be obtained from motorcar dealers in the country of export to assist the customs clearance process in South Africa.

Barry thanks for the support. A lot of folk are genuinely interested in this project. It helps a lot to know that most people appreciate all the hard, slogging work that goes into a project like this. Part of the pay-back is seeing peoples faces when they look at the car - it causes chaos when I take it out, factories go on stop when the workers come out to gawp!! Love it.Bazza wrote:Hi Chris

It's scheduled for the Old Timer Grand Prix in Germany in 2 weeks. Still a few jobs to do though.

Need every darned second. Tacho coming back tomorrow. Final paint re-touches Wednesday. RetroFord Mag want it soon and I've just had the OK to 'shoot' the car at Goodwood, or Silverstone!zahistorics wrote:Well at least you have an extra week to work on it now .
