Temp Gauge

Hi all I am experiencing a problem with my V6 Cortina I had a overheating problem a few months ago so I took it to a radiator shop had a pressure test done and found the radiator to be blocked so we then fitted a new 3 core radiator new termostat and cap also put in a new water pump
Since then I have done about 2000km with no problems the gauge never even reach the first mark even on long trips but today I drove just 30ks and the needle came into the red
I check the water and it was not boiling there was no pressure build up either so I can't understand what could be the problem any assistance with this please as in at a dead end
Where should I start???

Maybe a faulty sender unit or the cable earthing out

I have a similar problem on my V6 Capri, My temp gauge and Fuel gauge do not work properly. The problem with mine is that the voltage regulator is faulty not sure about yours though.

Thanks guys will try changing the sender unit first and test
The fuel gauge is working 100%

Hi there,

If you switch on the ignition and the gauge goes into the red straight away you have an earth directly to your gauge.
If you disconnect the terminal from the sender and the gauge drops back down the sender is the problem.
If not there is an earth in the loom somewhere and the best places to look are where the wiring comes into contact with the bodywork, such as rubbing somewhere or most often where the wiring passes through the bodywork and is usually insulated by a grommet.
These are prone to deteriorating after a time and as a result the vibration causes the insulation to rub through causing the short to earth.

Being an committed Ford freak, I do have to admit, heat gauges on 60/70 cars are sh#t. Do not trust them, they seldom go over half, and then its too late...
