Unusual Race Cars
Has anyone got pictures of unusual or unlikely cars that have raced.
How's this for an interesting Classic / Fine car?

Re: Unusual Race Cars
Gordini - tell us more about this car. Was this built as a race car? Do you still have it now? What is its history?
Sounds interesting.

Re: Unusual Race Cars
This is the only 1 of three cars that apparently competed in the 1964 9hr and was sold of the track to a guy in Kempton Park. It is a prototype that was build to test and develop the suspension on the later Renault Gordini's. I bought the car from the guy in Kempton in 1985 and raced it for a couple of years. The car and its trailer got stolen in 1990 and i found it back in 92, horrible condition. busy rebuilding it at the moment

Those are nice looking rims. look like Delta's or AMW's that have been widened. How wide are they?. Nice car. Gordini motor I presume?

Re: Unusual Race Cars
Are you sure about it competing in the 9hr? I am not familiar with this car but I think I would remember if it competed. Will do some searching to see if I can find out more. Was it actually built by the Matra works in France?

If you raced this car at Zwartkops 1989 or 1990 I may have some photo's I took.gordini wrote:This is the only 1 of three cars that apparently competed in the 1964 9hr and was sold of the track to a guy in Kempton Park. Besides this one which is unusual looking, I don't think Cape Town has seen the like of Zwartkops specials that raced in the Silvercup class. Cars that were normal cars but then "changed".
MK1 Escort with rotary motor, 140 coupe Datsun with turbo charged Skyline six that has the biggest turbo lag you've ever seen, R5 Renault with a rotary and so on.
That was the most fun trackto go to with a good vibe those days. There also used to be the North v South races. Like the one race a spectator did'nt want to wait in the long car que to get out. He was gesuip. He driove down to the fence by the road that goes past Zwartkops. He then did a few Madmax 360's that caused a lot of dust. Next thing we seen him join the traffic on the road to Pretoria. He kicked up the sand to hide his deed for that moment then drove right through the perimeter fence !

Re: Unusual Race Cars
According to the Matra forum, the bodyshell was build by Matra. Its fibreglass. The rest of the car is GordiniKillarney Racer wrote:Are you sure about it competing in the 9hr? Re: Unusual Race Cars
I raced the car at Zwartkops, Midvaal,Kayalami,Goldfields,Lichtenburg, etc. Competed in the Clubmans class, because the car was very competitive.Lino wrote:If you raced this car at Zwartkops 1989 or 1990 I may have some photo's I took.gordini wrote:This is the only 1 of three cars that apparently competed in the 1964 9hr and was sold of the track to a guy in Kempton Park. Re: Unusual Race Cars
Hi Gordini, did some research last night.
Your car definately did not race in the 1964 9hr. I couldn't find any reference to it for any 9hr before or after this year.
The first Matra that raced in the 9hr was the M650 V12 2993cc car that competed at le Mans. In 1969 two cars were entered for Beltiose/van Rooyen and Pescarolo/Servoz-Gavin by the Matra works. It was not a happy meeting as neither started the race. Van Rooyen jumped ship and raced one of the Superformance Alfas finishing 11th.
