Where all 67 Mustang undersides sprayed like that?
Didn't the wetter states have some form of underbody protection?

I think under body coating was always an option to be ticked when the car was ordered.
Brennan, if I can give you advice is create the over spray as per factory ( in the pics).
That is the one 'mistake ' I made with my Roadrunner. When the car was on the rotisserie I sprayed the underside body colour, which was black. Now I wish I left the grey primer and faded the paint in...

Spray it exactly as per factory , and stripes on the driveshaft, and all the little yellow and red paint marks they used after each station of the build ....

I am not a concourse guy... most award winning resto mods are gloss paint color underneath... my preference would be to do what will last, remember you are at the coast... I would spray the underneath a protective black, as one would do in the engine bay & inner fenders.... but that's just me....

Len, I have have decided to go all original so I feel I have to stay the course...

Ok I have been doing some research on this. What the guys do in the USA is prime the cars with epoxy primer. You get a PPG epoxy primer that matches red oxide finish.

but here is the kicker.. that I have learnt.. The underside of mustangs were all painted different colours depending on which plant they were manufactured. Cars produced in San Jose plant were painted red oxide and cars manufactured in Dearborn (which where my car was manufactured) were painted "Slop Grey" Whats that ? Well it appears they mixed up paint leftovers and made it up into various shades of dark grey. they say that slop grey is a semi gloss finish which would make sense. Now hows that ??

So in trying to find out what to do here and find out a colour code for this "special paint". it seems the advise is to climb under my car and see if the slop grey can be found.. So I did that this weekend and can you believe it that I found that after cleaning up the chassis with a bit of petrol that its all 100% original slop grey down there with a bit of undercoating/ sound deadening over that. I can best explain this original sound deadening almost like stone chip but a little more transparent and not so thick.

So this is what orginal slop grey looks like on my car :

I held it up to something painted black so you can see the difference in grey and black. It has a bit of a semi gloss finish to it as well :

This is how the undercoating needs to look but with the red oxide version:

So I will be following this, the advantages are that modern day high end epoxy primers seal in the metal and give us that protection and durability but at the same time, if the execution is done right the look and feel of the original method of the factory workers.

This is how the back seat foot area/ pan looks, has a few pinholes and pitting, not bad at all most would probably leave it but if I am replacing front I might just as well do the entire lot??

Ok a bit of a update on the build.

All suspension, brake, steering and body parts have been loaded in USA and ready to ship. Its going to be like Xmas receiving all this stuff at once. These parts should keep me busy for some time !

Paint :
I am also bringing in specialised paint for this car, because what we can get here in not good enough.
SPI epoxy primer will be used to coat the the underbody to match exact factory Slop Grey underneath, correct gloss of black in engine bay and entire body to be epoxy primed and sealed.
