Chev SS & Fairmont GT racing

Post by IndianaJones » Wed 29 Apr 2015, 19:10

Hi

Don't know whether this has been asked & answered, but here goes.

Besides the fact that the CanAm and Capri Perana existed, and weighed less, why wasn't the Chev 350 SS and Fairmont GT ever raced in SA when they were new, or were they? Even as privateer entries?

With the success the Aussies had racing the Falcon GT-HO and Holden Monaro, I find it odd.
Were there rules that would have made them uncompetitive?
Both would have had at least 48 cubic inches on the Capri or CanAm

This has been brought up but I too ask my self this often " what if " !!! I truely believe if RSA had raced these cars then the whole outcome would be completely different.

Ford did race but with Basil Green and his Perana.
There was a XYGTHO Phase 3 sent over that was tested and it did very well. But Ford went down the Capri road.
The GT Fairmont was used in sprints how ever.

Dirk Marais raced an SS at Kyalami in Group 2 around 1971. Koos Swanepoel raced a GT in CT in the early seventies too. Cheers!

I think the "ships" did not have handling dinamics of the Escorts or the Capri's which even struggled to keep up with the Escorts.

Would be great to see some pics of any racing Fairmonts though. I have seen some doing stock car/oval racing on some internet sites, but that was sad....

These two were monaro's at the old Goodwood track.
Note the no 28. Fuel spilling from the filler cap, all windows, license, wipers and back seat.
