Calling ford V6 Guru`s

Post by marnus » Tue 11 Aug 2015, 12:00

Hi Guys

I have an upgrade essex V6 that has been rebuilt top to bottom. (electronic dizzy and hydraulic lifters)
Now first fire up she runs well and smooth.
next day only the right bank is running, when all 6 leads are connected its a rough idle, remove the left bank and it is smooth.
Heads have been triple checked, valve seats, stems have been triple checked, block has been checked, dizzy was swapped, leads were swapped, firing order has been checked.

No leaks on intake gasket

any advise??
Regards

Hello Marnus!

After swopping dizzys, did you re-install a mechanical one? If so, it might be that the mechanical one is faulty - points, rotor, condenser?

Also, when you checked the leads did they all have spark when you took them off the plugs one by one?

Hope you get it sorted soon ;) ;)

Hallo Marnus

Now that we've eliminated the dizzy/leads, you can turn your attention to the carbie. If possible, you need to check the vacuum on the intake with a vacuum gauge - you should find an airline at the bottom of the foot piece on the intake manifold. If the vacuum is in-sufficient/low, you will also have the engine running rough.

When you took the leads off the left bank, you increased the vacuum to the right bank as three of the cylinders now have no need for vacuum, thus the engine running more smooth.

Because you've fitted hydraulic lifters and new valve seats, you need to check that the tappets aren't too tight now as the seats are also new and have more beef - even if the book gives you a recommended gap/torque rating, you need to double-check they aren't too tight - this will definitely cause problems with vacuum.....perhaps look at coming down a turn on each tappet lock.

Remember with those Essex engines - rather more rattler tappets than too tight which will also cause possible damaged to the valves/stems.

Hope this helps. ;)

i agree with Hano/Marnus

i just rechecked my 79R setting the cam i run current valves were tight then went to forum and checked settings for cam 35IN 45EX fantastic these essex need precise valve clearance to run smooth also Carb is an issue when they mess around but do the basic check if all is good engine should be running smooth

Hey guys

After being Dr Diagnosis I replaced the hydraulic lifters with solid ones and all issues disappeared.
Strange, motor was always running on the hydraulic ones.
