Seems to me the 280 SLC's are valued more than the V8 450 SLC, why is this? Why isn't the range topper, worth the most?

Ben this won't answer your question ,but I've seen the 350 SL goes for much more than both of them . Only reason I can think of was that it was the first model in the R107 range built along side Pagoda just before they were phased out .It was then rebadged 450sl as it had a 4,5 liter v8 engine a year later.

My off the cuff remark. V8 or nothing when it comes to these, why have a 6 if you can have a V8.

I think the reason that the 280s are preferred is that the sixes are bulletproof.
The valve chains on the V8s get 'interesting' followed by 'very expensive' if not properly looked after. Guess how I know this....

An interesting thing about these SL's was the fact they were practically hand built in EL, there was quite a good article in CAR about the production line.
