THE COST TO RESPRAY A CAR TODAY

I have a 74 Beetle which is still (in my opinion) in brilliant condition. No accident damage at all.

After many years I can see a little spot of rust here and there. Very very small. Very limited. Majority

of panels unaffected.

After careful consideration I have decided that the Beetle needs a fresh coat of paint and

the few spots removed. Many people think I am overkilling with my plans but that is besides the point.


Some little parts (rubbers,scrapers etc) I have already imported to make the Beetle eventually

tip top. I insist that all windows , glass and strips have to be removed before repainting. Majority of

panels need only to be flattened and sprayed.


What is an acceptable and reasonable price for the repainting of a Beetle given the background of my particular

car and with a view that the job has to be very neat ?

Good question Johan. I have had quotes ranging from R 30 000 to R 100 000. I think its a case of shopping around at reputable panel shops for the best deal, or getting referrals from guys who are happy with the jobs they have had done and feel they got value for money.

Depends on the amount of rust. Sometimes you think your vehicle is in good shape until they start to work on it then they find more rust and more body putty.

If you strip it and take it to the panel shop I would say between R20k and R30 for a decent job would be good if there are no serious rust.

It seems how much is almost how much each shop feels like charging. I wanted some minor paint work done on one my cars and was quoted some silly prices, like R5k for a bonnet.

Many panel beaters are on insurance panels and they do not want to do private work. So for private work they quote silly prices in the hope not to get the work.

Panel beater on insurance panel will typically charge you R5k for a bonnet where a panel beater not working for insurance will probably charge between R1.5k to R2k per panel (those I used in the past)

The guy who does my Pontiac is not on insurance panel and he also wants to stay off it for now. Although he prefer small insurance like jobs he does take on larger jobs every now and then. My Pontiac will hopefully be finished by mid Feb.

A reputable shop, proper strip & assemble you're in for R40 -R45k

We spray our own cars , no way I'd do a full strip and respray with quality product for under 50k ... My paint/material costs 10k .... A beetle in fair condition between 20-30 for it to shine like a showcar
