E23 745i

Post by SA_XW_GT » Thu 08 Jan 2009, 15:33

I'm suprised that there has been no mention of the SA only E23 BMW 745i with the 24v DOHC. More suprising however is that one of them was raced. I bet the driver finished his race relaxed and refreshed!

Quoted from Wiki:
A different 745i was built for the South Africa market, because the turbocharger on the European-market 745i could not be installed in right-hand-drive versions of the car due to space restrictions in the engine bay (in RHD configuration, the steering shaft occupied the space where the turbocharger/exhaust was located on LHD versions). This car was fitted with the 286 hp (213 kW) dual-camshaft 24-valve type-M88 /3 Motorsport engine (with a Bosch ML-Jetronic fuel injection system) as used in the M635i, and M5. 209 of these cars were built between 1984 and 1986, fitted with either an automatic transmission or a 5-speed 'sport' gearbox. Of the 209 cars built 192 were automatics and 17 were fitted with manual gearboxes.

BMW South Africa ran one of these 745i models in Class A of the South African Modified Saloon Car Championship, the only BMW-Sanctioned motor sport application in the history of BMW 7-series cars.

Were there not two raced? One in Wesbank Modifieds Class A and the other in Group1? Relaxed?? I reckon Tony Viana had his hands quite full with this car!!

There were two raced by Tony Viana. One raced in 1985 in Group 1 and is restored and is owned by Paulo Cavaleiri. The other was raced in 1986 in Wesbank Modified's and is owned by myself . I am currently restoring the car at home and hope to have it complete first quarter 2009. Cheers! :D

We have discussed them a few times and I think they are mentioned on the main site as well. One or two has come up for sale the last year, at ridiculously low prices.

I think they are just fantastic, there is a scanned copy of the owners manual somewhere on the internet.
Yes we did build muscle cars in RSA!!!!

Two 745i's have just cropped up in my neck of the woods.

The first is an Auto that started life as the Mayoral car in George. The second owner now has the car in PE and is considering selling it. It is in immaculate, original condition with only 130,000 km on the clock. If anyone is interested they can PM me for more details. I'll try and get some photos to post on the site as well.

The same guy sold another 745i - MANUAL - to a mate of mine. He has an M5 with a sick motor. The 7's motor and box is being whipped out to be transplanted into the M5. On the one hand, I think this is sacrilege, as there were only ever 15 or so manuals built, but on the other hand, I think that the M5 is probably a more exciting car. This particular 745 also needed some bodywork done - probably still worth restoring though :(

There might also be a 530mle coming out of the woodwork soon......

Had a mate Brain Crossley about 25 years back that owned a 745i lhd turbo manual. We shared a river front property on the Vaal river just above the barrage,+/- 75 km from JHB. He owned a lift company and was on 24hr standby. One evening around 10 in the evening he got a call. I went with, took us about 19 min to the center of JHB, first time in my life I thought it was the end of my days.
He sold the beast because the turbo housing keeped cracking.
