Hi

Its been a while since I posted, been busy with lots of small things that dont really show in photos.

Anyway since the last post we have finished priming the exterior as well as the interior. I was really impressed how the interior came out, all nice and new and shiny.. But that did not last long because next we scuffed it all up again to add sound Deadener and Seam Sealers as per factory practices of 1966/67 at Dearborn USA.

The product I used was recommended by the guys at Concours Mustang Forum in the USA as a great alternative to the factory original texture/look and finish of the day. Its called Spectrum Sludge sound Deadener its a water based product so very easy to work with and I managed to get it locally from their distributers in CT called Second Skin. So that worked out just great for me !

It was quite a weird process as the factory was notoriously messy and we as restorers of these classic cars have a bit of OCD to be neat and perfect. Anyway I tried my best to make a mess and get the factory finish on my nicely painted interior body... The aim here was to put the Spectrum on nice and thick with a sponge and a brush, trying to create the texture and peaks and valleys of the original, then once it was dry I took Rocker Guard spray to feather out the edges to give it that sprayed on look.. Making more mess and over spray.

Then in the boot/trunk I had to poor the sealer in certain areas to give that smooth poured look with drips and all...

Lastly I had to paint the roof and rear quarters with red oxide and necessary overspray. It was a messy process and next I need to finish off the sealer on the floor pan and front. We will then be ready for final Base Coat/ Clear Coat on the interior in the original Dark Moss Green. The Dash and doors will then need to be painted satin black or "charcoal grey metallic" as per the original paint code which I have managed to track down from PPG USA. Another weird colour in theory but on the car its going to look super amazing as it matches the door pads and black interior vinyl perfectly.

When I see restorations done to this standard I sometimes think its sad that there aren't big show awards for cars like this. Really great job.

Really like the fact you are trying to restore to the car to "as left factory".

Wait not for tomorrow to do what can be done today, live each day for one knows not what the next day may hold.

Amazing stuff so far. Thanks for updating.

Quick question. You use a epoxy primer which takes a while to cure. I have read that some paints that it must be recoated again with in that period. Can you leave the epoxy primer for a few months or a year before you start MS primer or skim coat.

Got a restoration project coming up that will go back to bare metal. Your thoughts about etch primer vs epoxy primer?

Dura-blocks worth getting. Looks to be the block to have when blocking.

Thks
On the Epoxy Primer - You can leave a car painted in epoxy forever like that as its a cured paint with activator as its a sealed paint system. Etch primer however you need to re-coat straight away as its a single stage paint that re-acts to moisture/ humidity etc. So if you think of leaving you car for any length of time in etch you going to have huge problems !!

I think the thing you may have read about epoxy and the " recoat period" is that within 7 days of painting it you can apply your next coat i.e. MS or top coat within 7 days as it has not completely cured and this saves you from having to scuff it up. Another major advantage of a epoxy. If you leave it longer than 7 days like any other paint system you need to scuff before applying next layer on paint.

Thank you...! the hardest part really is having to think 3 steps ahead and the research that goes with it i.e. you cant just do what you think is right / or normally would do. So every step requires you doing your homework before you can do anything which takes the time.

There would not be a single restoration shop in SA that would spend the time or have the info avail to them so it really means you need to have the passion and drive to do it yourself if you are wanting to go to factory concours.

But it is very interesting to learn how things were done back in the day. Its also amazing that in the internet/information age that this info is avail across the globe from USA to deep dark Africa on how things were done in 1 of 3 ford assembly plants broken down to year and even month as processes at each plant and workers during different times at those plants changed. This level of info and detail would not be avail to me in SA or even the average American hobbyist even 10 years ago, and the amount of information and time people share on forums is amazing. Without forums it would really not be possible.

Thks G... me too I just love to sit and garage and stare at her...

Len, if you had a black 68 Charger that could have been fun..

I might have one non factory trick up my sleeve on this build as I still need to source crank, rods and pistons, I may just build a 445 stroker but with stock intake, exhaust manifolds, heads etc. It will look completely stock except for the internals basically. Not sure... but if i do watch out... lol :P

Ok some more work done on the sealer and sound deadening done this weekend.

I took photos before I stripped off the seam sealers on some but not all areas. This is the way it was done at the factory so my reference to try follow and match :

and this is how it came out, together with overspray effects :)

This is the front cowl area :

I had to laugh because when doing the seam sealer on the top cowl using the beige color sealer I tried my best to not do it neatly. I posted pics of this on the concours mustang forms and the guys there came back saying I have done it to neatly as the factory workers did not do it like this. So I may need to go back and make more messy to get that sloppy factory look... lol

Spent 12 hours so far on sealer work, probably got another 10 hours to go. Its a very specific job and process but I am sure if I stay the course it will turn out as ford would have... This will all get over coated with new Dark Moss Green Base Coat/ Clear Coat so it should all blend in quite nicely.

Next is to seam seal the front firewall and engine compartment/bay and front fender aprons.
