Hi, removing the ignition must be an impossible task that nobody on the forum has tackled? Mmmm, I will leave the post here, hopefully someone knows.

Any chance of a picture? Some ignition switches were mounted using snap off heads leaving a mushroom head behind which cannot be drilled.
Nobody is going to admit they used a angle grinder & 4lb hammer.

My Opel Rekord uses the following procedure.
Disconnect the battery
Remove the steering
Remove securing exterior screws holding the ignition
Remove the interior assembly screws working from the front
The loose assembly can then be separated and removed.
Check how the wiring and plug is unplugged.

The Opel has a closed column cover that cannot give you access to the interior!

I cannot get the steering ignition cover off... it has no screws, I am quite mechanically minded, but this has stumped me.

The key needs to be in the "on" position

Key in on is correct! Else the steering lock will not disengage :D This is wat is preventing you sliding out and over the column!!
