CKD South African built Sunbeam Tiger

Post by crk » Thu 16 Jan 2020, 13:13

Good morning from N Wales UK, in 1994 a Sunbeam Tiger came to the UK,I bought it in 2004,it has on its reg document 289 engine, I have often wondered if any history about in SA (have no SA reg number),I started to look the engine numbers recently, discovered D20E-6015-AB which is a 302,also the reg document records the engine number as 386 which is odd, it has an alloy high rise manifold, and was told it was bought to uk with "hotter cams". The Tiger has had modification to panel ,under the bumper to aid cooling, it was originally white now red
Could this engine have come from a Ford Capri V8 Perana??
I know this is a massive shot in the dark but would be very grateful for any thoughts/history etc
All the best
Colin

PS well done re the Rugby world cup, Wales did the best they could!

Wow that's a beautiful tiger!

Any pictures of the engine bay? I have always wondered about the CKD Tigers, was lucky enough to drive a 260cu original Tiger last year and well it was metaphorically like grabbing a Tiger by the tale....very exciting to drive.

302 would make a Tiger a monster....

Hi, nice Tiger.
Does the engine number have BG before the 386? If not it won't be a Perana engine.
I think new imported unstamped engines were given a number by the Traffic Department but I think there was a logo included.

Looking at the engine from the passenger side of the car the number will be on a flat horizontal section at the rear of the block at the rear of the head at the place where the bellhousing is bolted on. Hope that makes sense.
