THE SPRINGBOK SERIES
Re: THE SPRINGBOK SERIES
Sorry for the bad quality on this one. It's the start of the 1968 Cape 3 hour. I have no idea where I got this from. What a car the CanAm Ferrari was!

An amazing thread this, thanks for all the contributions, those pictures are like gold...I have actually traced that Pual Hawkins Ferrari to its current owner in the USA in that picture it was yet at full Can Am spec, that occured a few years later.
Must say that Chev ad certainly was catchy...something my dad remembered very well......

Sorry, the stuff wouldn't upload
I found some more pics of the Ferrari. The red car is taken a year later in the pits after the 3 hour at Killarney when Robin Widows had taken the car over. It ran very slowly compared to the year previously with Paul Hawkins at the wheel.
Some more from the 1968 9 hour...........

Great pictures it might interest people to know that this P4 Ferrari was on the only Ferrari sports car to run in tabacco livery.....
That particular car is living in America now and is in full Can Am spec, doesnt look like the car in the pictures, I mught be wrong but the chassis number is 0850.

Re: THE SPRINGBOK SERIES
Your're right ZA. In fact we were the first country in the world to start the sponsorship thing in all classes of the sport. Copmanies used to advertise but nowhere was there a car or bike done out in the chief sponsor's livery. Our F1's particularly were a scource of interest when the GP circus visited here in the late sixties. It was Gunston that got the ball rolling. There're not many people who realise that.

Yes Gunston were the first company to have a full sponsorship car. Many people think Emabassy were the first in the UK, but they were 6 months later.

SA didn't only feature in F1 with overall advertising. Doug Serrurier managed to secure Walls Ice Cream to be painted all over his Lola T70 Ford as far back as 1967, long before any other team had got their own principle sponsors.

Re: THE SPRINGBOK SERIES
Wouldn't it be great if this series was revived? I'm not talking about David Piper coming out here with his clan to race in one hour endurance races in different classes over nine hours. I'm talking about a full on series throughout South Africa.
We have got the cars, be they saloons, GT or sports cars, plus some pretty good locally made creations. Sure David Piper and his group could definitely be included. Why not? This could be a spectacle in the modern sense, bringing back all the vibe and excitement of the old days.. I don't believe there would be a problem mixing old and modern. Naturally a driver like Piper may not be able to handle a sustained long race, but he could get a younger person to drive some of his cars.
What do you guys think?
