No roll cage 8O - they were either brave, or mad, or both.

That's what it was like. The Fine cars nowadays don't need roll cages and some go faster than that Volvo

Quite ironic that the picture of the rolled Chatz Volvo would be posted yesterday.

Louis Powell says he was sitting in his office yesterday and saw a gentleman talking to one of his sales staff. The guy looked familiar and he stepped out to investigate.

Turned out to be Arnold Chatz. Apparently his daughter lives in Cape Town and he was down here visiting her.

Arnold is retired now and lives on a farm near the Kruger National Park.

He spent about an hour talking to Louis about the good old days of racing in the 60's and 70s.

In parting he asked Louis to pass on his regards to his old sparring partner Peter Gough.

He certainly was a motorsport icon over many years. Because I was a Gough supporter, I always saw Chatz as the "opposition". Same with van Rooyen. But an Alfa guy through and through. He had a successful dealership in JHB and I believe he did well out of it. Probably explains his living near KNP on a farm - lucky man!!

Look in the background of this picture. Is there anyone who can get a better shot of that car and more history of it?

This is definately the Els/Kruger car.

The bodyshell years later ended up at Hydrenco when they were still in Paarden Eiland. Kotie Malan's business. I have no idea how it got there and cannot explain it.

But there was only one racing 164 in S A and I'm 99% sure it was the same car.

Does anyone else remember the car standing outside the Hydrenco factory in the yard?
