Keeping stuff you are never going to use is one problem like the program on DSTV where they keep so much crap that you can't see the house anymore and they get a doctor to sort you out.

I think this is quite a good topic, so let me add something, while Rassie finds what he thought he posted

If you never throw away any pieces of angle iron, different thickness pipes, or basically any piece of metal, because you always need a piece sometime to weld into whatever, you will soon have a pile of scrapmetal. I did just that and still have numerous offcuts. A while ago I collected all the pieces I have'nt used and all the rusted ones that I know I won't use, including an old drum (which was going to be a braai someday) and took it to the local scrapmetal dealer. I got over R700 for it !

On another day I took an old Z-drive inboard boat gearbox, which was busted and lying around for a long time to the same dealer and got R488 for it

I have since started collecting any old stripped bolts, breaklinings, broken or damaged steel rims and basicly anything that is replaced that has metal in it, in old paint cans. As soon as I have a few together (doesn't take long) I'm off to the Scrap dealer. You'd be surprised how quickly you clear up space by just removing junk.

Rassie, my garage had racks right around and under the racks, I would nail Purity bottle caps.

I would then fill them with stuff and screw them into the lids, hanging form the shelf - great space saver.

My dad has a shelf full of old oil cans, with one corner or side cut off. Sorts all the tiny things like screws and washers
